Revving into the Future: Exploring Electric Motorcycles with Maeving

Ever wondered how electric motorcycles are transforming urban commuting and contributing to a more sustainable future? In the latest episode of The Third Angle podcast we had the unique opportunity to meet Seb Inglis-Jones, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Maeving, at their Coventry, UK factory, where every bike is meticulously hand-built.

Hand-Built Heritage with a Modern Twist

Coventry, a city with a rich motorcycle manufacturing history dating back to the late 19th century, serves as the perfect backdrop for Maeving’s operations.

Seb shared his own personal story of how his journey into the world of motorcycles began:

"The reason I originally bought a bike was because I started working in [a UK town called] Slough and had this horrendous commute...I realized that by getting a bike, I would save 26 days a year."

Seb’s passion for solving real-world problems through innovative solutions is evident in every aspect of Maeving. The company isn’t just about making electric motorcycles; it's about creating a product that addresses climate change and urban commuting challenges.

Designing the Future of Urban Mobility

Maeving’s latest model, the RM1S draws inspiration from the iconic designs of the 1920s and the cafe racer era of the 1960s and 70s, revered by legends like James Dean and Steve McQueen. Maeving prides itself on creating motorcycles that are not only efficient and environmentally friendly but also aesthetically pleasing.

Seb explains how their team is focused on creating a product that's both user-friendly and fun:

"We wanted to make sure that it was doing something to solve a problem that we cared about. And for us, that was climate change."

Understanding the dynamics of urban transportation, the RM1S is designed to cover all bases—from short urban commutes to longer rides that might include A roads and brief motorway spells.

Integrating Advanced Technology with PTC's CREO

To understand the technical side of Maeving’s design process, we spoke with Brian Thompson from PTC, who elaborated on the role of PTC’s 3D CAD solution, CREO, in helping Maeving achieve their design goals:

"With motorcycles, the way they look to the consumer is an important draw...the nature of the mechanical aspect of the design needs to be exposed."

CREO's advanced surfacing module enables Maeving’s engineers and designers to integrate beautiful aesthetic surfaces with the mechanical intricacies of the motorcycle, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal. This unique capability is what makes PTC’s CREO an indispensable tool in Maeving’s design and production process.  Maeving is supported by PTC Partner, Concurrent Engineering.
