Storage Born in the Cloud

Storage Born in the Cloud

Current estimates show that humans are generating more than 325 million terabytes of data every single day. That’s an enormous amount of information, and organizations are struggling to manage it.

As organizations grow, the data they are managing across business solutions, applications and end users will continue to increase radically. This data is usually unstructured, often containing multiple different formats and media. Making matters even more complicated, this data is siloed and often will not fit into central repositories.

This is where object storage has a chance to shine. It can break down silos by delivering scalable storage for almost any type of data. It’s a cost-effective solution that allows for data to be stored in its native format, and since it is in the cloud it can be accessed virtually anywhere. Organizations can store large volumes of unstructured data from daily operations such as email, sensor logs, and video.

With object storage, organizations can extend their on-premises storage and archives to the cloud. The ability to replicate data across multiple datacenters and geographical regions has benefits across multiple solutions. When it comes to backup and recovery, having the ability to access stored data during a crisis can help ensure that systems and applications can run without interruption.

Choosing an object storage provider can be tricky, not all solutions are built the same.

As you’re considering vendors and whether or not you need it, keep in mind that there are a variety of use cases for object storage. Here are two:

Data Lakes

Organizations that store large amounts of data in a centralized repository would benefit from using object storage. Being able to store unstructured data makes it easy to scale storage easily. Since you’re paying only for what you use, it’s easy to increase storage when you need it.

Large Data Backup Repositories

Cloud object storage is a great way to archive data long-term – whether for regulatory or compliance reasons, or to replace on-premises tapes and disk media. It’s a cost-effective way to archive large amounts of data.
