Twitter DMs Are Getting More Exclusive

1. Another Way to Share Music

Instagram continues to try and keep things fresh - the newest feature being a new way to interact through the Note’s shelf in your DMs. IG encourages you to share your current vibe by adding a new feature that allows users to include a song in your note. It’ll be shown to users in the notes section at the top of their inboxes so that followers can tap through and listen. This could be a good opportunity to share any new or favorite music with friends or even showcase your own music. This a little throwback to AIM away messages but with a musical twist!

2. For the ‘Let me know if you get home ok’ Friends

During Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year, several new products, software, and services were introduced - including the latest operating system iOS 17. One of the standout features is the new ‘Check in’ safety aspect. The feature shares automated updates with selected contacts to inform them when you’ve arrived safely at your destination. It has the ability to track your journey progress, any delays, or if you take a different route whilst also sharing the battery level of your phone. Great for those early morning runs, walks home from parties, or even just driving home from a friend's house.

3. Shopping on TikTok Gets Easier

Similar to Google and Pinterest Lens, TikTok will be testing their own visual product search option in an attempt to boost e-commerce sales. This feature will allow users to take photos and search for similar matches in TikTok Shop listings. Pinterest, Google, and Bing all have versions of visual search tools - however, as TikTok continues to grow as a search engine this tool may become a new favorite for younger users.

4. Say No to Spam Messages - Unless You’re Verified…

It looks like Twitter will be introducing new restrictions on DM sending - the platform will reportedly be limiting how many DMs can be sent per day from unverified users. This is in an effort to combat DM misuse such as mass message sends, flooding of inboxes, and random junk messages that no one wants. Soon only Twitter Blue users will be allowed to send DM requests to users who don’t follow them. Some users are even questioning if this new feature is an ‘anti-spam measure or a Twitter Blue incentive’...

5. Insight into Snapchat AI

This week Snapchat released new stats on ‘My AI’ usage. The overview includes usage stats and some of the most common questions that people have asked the bot. Snapchat also announced that they are also able to use conversations to enhance targeting for advertisers. Lifestyle categories are usually based on what content a user watches, but now new signals from conversations will allow AI to improve audiences and therefore improve the relevance of the ads users see in the app.

What is a ‘Canon Event’?

After the new Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse movie came out, we have been seeing a trend emerge on TikTok that reframes unfortunate experiences as central to each person’s story. Also known as a ‘Canon Event’. Canon events are unavoidable and unchangeable. This trend has everyone reassessing their past experiences and reframing it as an event that was pivotal to their life that can’t and shouldn’t be interfered with. Despite being a little confusing without context, the trend has received over 168.4M views on the platform. Looking back, what would your canon event be?
