What kids say: Annual plans, like a boss.

What kids say: Annual plans, like a boss.

I'm often trying to explain to my kids just what I do at work. They sometimes think I just sit around eating froyo, riding hoverboards and searching for animated GIFs (OK, maybe not that far off).

Yesterday, I talked with them about our annual plan presentations to the Exec Team, where we share with them all we want to accomplish in 2016. Every year the process gets a little better, but it's still a lot of hard work!

I explained how the process works: You spend a lot of time writing something. You present it in a big meeting room with lots of people. Then you get asked tons of hard questions from the big bosses:

Our conversation:

C: "Were the bosses fat?"

Me: "Uh, no? I don't think so?"

J: "Were they wearing shades?"

Me: "No, this was inside."

J: "Then they weren't really big bosses."

C: "Will they fire you if you really really screw up?"

Me: "Um, I really hope not. LinkedIn wants you to try really hard on things that will hopefully work, but sometimes won't. It's OK to fail, but we want to succeed."

J: "Yeah, they'll only fire you if you get really unlucky. Like Friday the 13th to the power of a billion unlucky."

So it's clear: I'm going to have to do this "Bring Your Kids to Work" day thing a little more frequently, and with less snacks next time.

Why not have them give feedback or help create the plan as well? They have perspective and a growth mindset that often we adults forget. They could be KidSultants. Changes the whole Bring Your Kids to Work to Bring Your Kids to DO the work. https://my.ideator.com/ideas/722/public
