Your Comeback is Here

Your Comeback is Here

Let's Find Your Niche

Read time: 2 minutes

Some of you have been chewed up for breakfast and spit out. I can relate. I promise. But I also know a thing or two about a comeback. And I love when the underdog wins.

My biggest clapback? When I got laid off, terminated, whatever you want to call it, I clapped back by building a brand of 155,000 followers. A newsletter. A paid community. A network. Paid Sponsorships. I built security in my brand. And had a ton of fun doing it.

Why is having a brand crucial for job seekers and employees?

Because it's your ticket to stand out in a crowded market.

And it's your safety net should you ever need it.

Do you need a brand if you are employed? YES.

Employers can take away your laptop and your paycheck.

But they can't take away your brand.

So how do you pick your niche?

We overcomplicate our niches.

I "should" choose "ChatGPT" because it's booming.

No, you should choose ChatGPT only if it is part of who you are.

Can you talk about it endlessly? More importantly, do you want to?

When defining your niche, ask yourself, "Who am I?" Your answer becomes your brand.

If you're struggling to find an answer, don't worry.

It may be easier to ask, "What do I genuinely care about?"

Here is my example:

I care about:

  • My son with Autism. Pushing for an inclusive world for him.

  • My sobriety journey.

  • Influencing change in the ridiculous world of Talent Acquisition.

  • The Employee taking their power back.

I can build a brand around any of these topics, because I can blab on about them for hours.

And if that ever changes... my brand will also change.

When you talk about what you care about, employers feel like they know you. And that makes your background come alive.

It also makes you easier to approach.

If you build an authentic brand, the employers will come to you.

Special Reminder: If you were just Laid Off, It Could Be a Blessing

It was a blessing in disguise for me.

Your employer was holding you back. You might not see it now, but you will.

You have the opportunity to do some really mind-blowing stuff.

And to build a brand that no future company can ever take away from you.

Let's show the world what you're made of. Your comeback starts now.

Be authentic. Be vulnerable. Share what you care about.

Employers will come to you.

PS. Candidates with a personal brand vs. candidates without one - who has the advantage?
