Check out the new project brief published by USAID MOMENTUM, which provides guidance on implementing healthcare worker training in fragile settings. We collaborated with USAID MOMENTUM and Laerdal Global Health to implement the World Health Organization's Essential Newborn Care 1 course in South Sudan with a virtual mentorship component to cement skill development. The brief showcases best practices learned from this implementation, including: - Plan for cross-facility learning and collaboration - Strengthen capacity of local institutions - Identify and engage local leaders and champions - Establish multi-year partnerships to ensure sustainment of outcomes It was a privilege for the American Academy of Pediatrics to implement the project with these partners! Globally, 80% of teen smokers take up smoking before age 13. With smoking causing 85% of lung cancer cases, this presents a major pediatric health challenge. This World Lung Cancer Day, we're focused on our 19-country initiative for tobacco control and cessation with our partner, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Office on Smoking and Health, Global Tobacco Control Branch. Together with pediatric societies across Europe and Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa, we are establishing learning collaboratives where pediatricians meet to develop awareness and advocacy initiatives. The learning collaboratives have launched pediatrician education programs and public service campaigns to support tobacco control in each region. As we continue this work, we aim to create a smoking- and cancer-free future for children and adolescents. #WorldLungCancerDay #lungcancer #globalhealth

Our global Essential Newborn Care courses engage local champions to support low-dose, high-frequency training with the NeoNatalie Live simulator. Read on to learn from our partners at Laerdal Global Health and clinical researchers on how local leadership supports successful training.
Appointing local motivating champions + NeoNatalie Live = Increased training frequency for newborn resuscitation 👶🏾 We're always looking to better understand how our solutions can support sustainable and impactful change to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns. 🔦 That’s why we're using today's post to shine the light on research by May Sissel Vadla from 2022: "Newborn resuscitation simulation training and changes in clinical performance and perinatal outcomes: a clinical observational study of 10,481 births" 📈 This study, based in Tanzania, reports a gradual improvement in real newborn resuscitation skills after introducing a novel simulator (NeoNatalie Live) and then local champions. Importantly, the frequency of trainings increased after the introduction of motivating local champions, with the study’s results showing a 37% increase in Midwives’ training frequency, compared to baseline data. 👉Our takeaway: local champions who can ensure low-dose, high frequency training is carried out regularly and effectively in facilities where our solutions are present are vital to sustainable impact, which can help save lives. Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/dvYYDYTi You can learn more about the smart manikin, NeoNatalie Live, here: https://lnkd.in/dPgairBd #globalhealth #newborn #newborncare #neonatologist #neonatology #simulation #simulationtraining

On World Hepatitis Day, we're proud to showcase our collaboration with the Global Immunization Division of the CDC! From 2018 through 2023, the AAP partnered with the CDC to increase demand for vaccinations, including hepatitis vaccines, across 19 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. We cooperated with the pediatric societies in these countries to develop advocacy strategies at country and regional levels and to fill gaps in vaccine demand creation. Here's a glimpse of our initiatives: • Broadcasting radio jingles in Nigeria to encourage caregivers to vaccinate their children • Conducting workshops in Kenya, Uganda, and Indonesia to equip healthcare providers with vaccine communication skills • Hosting a webinar during World Immunization Week that drew over 400 attendees from 40 countries • Establishing an Africa Regional Learning Collaborative that has helped increase its member societies' interactions with policymakers We're proud to partner with so many of our fellow pediatric societies to support routine immunization and combat preventable illnesses like hepatitis! #WorldHepatitsDay #VaccinesWork #GlobalHealth
