After a decade of LEED v4 guiding projects and teams, and with LEED v5 opening for registration soon, this study (coauthored with Dr. Islam H. El-adaway) evaluates where LEED projects stand in terms of circularity. We analyzed the point achievement frequency of the Materials and Resources credits in 971 LEED BD+C NC v4 projects in the US. From the 971 projects, we found the following: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction – MR.C1: 588 out of 971 projects received zero points, while only 63 projects were awarded the full 5 points. Environmental Product Declarations – MR.C2: 786 out of 971 projects received 1 point, and only 62 projects received the full credit of 2 points. Sourcing of Raw Materials – MR.C3: 601 out of 971 projects received zero points, while only 63 projects received the full credit of 2 points. Material Ingredients – MR.C4: 548 out of 971 projects received 1 point, and 193 received the full credit of 2 points. Construction and Demolition Waste Management – MR.C5: 696 out of 971 projects received the full credit of 2 points. We shared our findings with a distinguished group of LEED Fellows and Accredited Professionals, and in the article, we include a discussion of the main challenges they raised and their recommendations for enhanced achievement. We hope these findings will spark discussions on enhancing the circularity of materials and resources through policies and practices within the upcoming LEED updates, and serve as a benchmark to assess where the industry currently stands and where it should be heading. The paper is published by ASCE Publishing ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering. A great thank you goes to the LEED subject matter experts for their time and shared insights, as well as to the editorial team and reviewers at JME for their support and feedback. I'm thrilled to announce that our recent paper, titled "Micro-Macro Assessment of The Pile Bearing Capacity Interaction with Single and Double Voids in Different Soil Densities Using The Discrete Element Method," has been published in ASCE Publishing prestigious International Journal of Geomechanics. In this study, our team explored the impact of soil variability, influenced by environmental changes, on geotechnical considerations. We focused on underground voids, which significantly affect subsoil structures such as piles. Using a two-dimensional Discrete Elements Method (DEM) model, we investigated voids in sandy soil and their effects on pile behavior, particularly bearing capacity and lateral pressure coefficients. Our results reveal that voids can reduce pile bearing capacity by up to 63% in critical zones, mainly due to decreased resistance at the pile's tip. This highlights the crucial importance of understanding void effects for safe subsoil structure design in geotechnical engineering. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the team members, Prof. Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi and Saman Ghaderi, for their exceptional efforts, contributions, and collaboration. In our recently paper published in ASCE Publishing Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering we investigate the effect of #gradation on the #strength and #fabric evolution of coarse-grained #soils using discrete element modeling (#DEM) simulations. This work shows that for the same state parameter (i.e., distance to the critical state line), well-graded soils exhibit a greater dilative behavior which gives them a greater peak strength in drained conditions. In undrained conditions, this allows well-graded soils to generate more negative excess pore pressures. The micromechanical analysis shows the larger particles in any assembly carry significantly greater contact forces and have many more contacts than the small particles. The paper can be found in this link: DEM Investigation of the Effect of Gradation on the Strength, Dilatancy, and Fabric Evolution of Coarse-Grained Soils https://lnkd.in/gaPx447J It was a great pleasure working with Mandeep Singh on this - he led this research as part of his PhD. It was also great to collaborate with Jason DeJong on his continued work on well-graded soils. Thank you National Science Foundation (NSF) for the funding to carry out this work!

I am delighted to share our new article published in the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management titled “Turning a Blind Eye: Ignoring Modern Slavery in the Race to Construction Project Completion, co-authored with Professor Giorgio Locatelli and Dr Tristano Sainati. This article addresses a disconnection between the official anti-modern slavery statements made by construction companies and the actual conditions observed on construction sites. Using semi-structured interviews conducted with participants from OECD countries (the UK, Australia, and Switzerland), it investigates why modern slavery still exists on construction sites managed by companies that pledged to fight it. The research specifically seeks to answer the following question: What mechanisms explain the difference between the official anti-modern slavery statements of construction companies and the empirical observations on construction sites?
