The Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory leads convergence research in biology, ecology, engineering, data discovery, physical sciences, and computing to advance U.S. competitiveness in the global bioeconomy and Earth system sustainability. Our researchers enjoy an open, inclusive, and innovative workplace where they collaborate daily to develop renewable energy solutions, improve Earth system models, and push the frontiers of systems and synthetic biology. Our scientists study how genes influence ecosystem-level processes, develop novel biodesign tools and testbeds for enzyme engineering, and apply the world’s fastest supercomputers to transform biological and environmental data into knowledge. Researchers advance signature technologies for dynamic characterization of complex biological and environmental systems and apply emerging capabilities that promise to transform how science is done through automated, data rich, and interconnected systems. In collaboration with experts across ORNL, industry, and academia, we aim to strengthen the nation’s economic competitiveness, enable resilient and sustainable communities, and facilitate stewardship of managed and natural resources.

Assessing the health of U.S. ecosystems: Upcoming National Nature Assessment will evaluate U.S. lands, waters, wildlife, and ecosystems. “We hope that this assessment will give a comprehensive view of our country’s biodiversity and ecosystems while identifying concerns related to equity and environmental justice,” said Oak Ridge National Laboratory conservation biologist Jessica Welch, who is serving as a Federal Coordinating Lead Author on the new report. Welch is spearheading a chapter that integrates NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Earth observations. As a member of the technical staff of NASA’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC), which is responsible for NASA Earth science data related to ecology and environmental processes, Welch said that one of her roles is making sure that “people understand that NASA has a stake in biodiversity and ecological conservation." The goal of meeting 100% of U.S. aviation fuel needs sustainably has been set for 2050. The big question: Is there enough biomass to support this goal? According to the 2023 Billion-Ton Report, an Oak Ridge National Laboratory-led analysis of available biomass resources, the U.S. currently has between 1.1 and 1.5 billion tons of biomass suitable and available for bioproduct production—“more than enough to meet the goals,” the report states. https://lnkd.in/gyRpy_SG #NationalAviationDay

This Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor's Chair worked alongside a team of researchers at the University of Tennessee to develop an algorithm that can predict #electricgrid stability using signals from pumped storage #hydropower projects. The algorithm will provide critical insight as the grid increasingly shifts to intermittent renewable power.
