About us

The mission of CCM is to serve news organizations that provide essential local coverage for populations whose voices and issues are underrepresented in mainstream media. The Center serves as a hub of information, resources, and training aimed at increasing the sustainability of this news media sector. Communities of color and immigrants often rely on their own news outlets as the only trusted sources of information. Yet these news outlets remain largely invisible to mainstream media, public officials, the nonprofit sector, advertisers, and philanthropic organizations. The single most pressing issue these outlets face is financial stability. They suffer from the same business pressures burdening all news organizations today. But they face additional unique challenges that include being resource-starved for a longer period of time, lacking access to professional training, often serving smaller audiences, and producing news in non-English languages which limit distribution. While some community media outlets have adapted and are thriving in a digital news environment, many lag behind in adopting the technologies and techniques now available to engage audiences. As a result, at a time when immigrants and communities of color are under increasing threat, the media outlets that serve them are deprived of the critical resources needed to sustain the delivery of important news. CCM plays a key information and networking role, ensuring that community news outlets from across the country have access to the same research, tools, funding, and training as mainstream news outlets. It serves as a resource hub and bridge to other organizations, professional associations, and foundations.

AI is reshaping media landscapes across the board. We spoke with three community media leaders ⬇️ about how they are currently leveraging AI for impact. Here are five key takeaways from the Black Media Futures panel we held earlier this year: 1) Ethical considerations are front and center, with panelists emphasizing transparency in AI use and the critical role of human oversight. 🌐🤔 2) Small newsrooms are supercharging productivity with AI for tasks like copy editing, image generation, and social media content creation. 🤖📝 3) Various tools are being used to boost audience engagement and potentially increase ad revenue through enhanced content production and targeting capabilities. 📈💡 4) But, AI isn't just for content - it's a Swiss Army knife for business ops! From pitch development to competitor analysis, AI is streamlining backend processes. 🏗️🔧 5) In some ways, AI is leveling the playing field, enabling Black-owned outlets to compete with larger media houses despite limited resources. 💼🔍 6) Looking ahead, panelists envision AI democratizing media production and urge Black media to develop their own AI technologies to maintain a competitive edge. 🔮👥 BONUS: As AI capabilities expand, protecting brand identity becomes crucial. Panelists emphasize maintaining a unique voice and community connection. 🔐🆔 These insights are just the tip of the iceberg! Special thanks to Vania André (Haitian Times), Lafayette Barnes (The Washington Informer) and Paris Brown (The Baltimore Times) for sharing their wisdom and experience with The Center for Community Media.

A ground-breaking diversity audit conducted across New Jersey newsrooms reveals significant disparities in journalist representation. Initiated by the Center for Cooperative Media and conducted by researchers at Denver University, the audit highlights the urgent need for inclusive hiring practices and coverage that reflects the diverse communities served. While New Jersey boasts a rich cultural tapestry, this diversity is not mirrored in its media landscape. Addressing these gaps will enable newsrooms to better serve their audiences and contribute to more equitable and accurate reporting. This essential initiative underscores the importance of diversity in media to enhance trust, engagement, and community relevance. Read more and request a copy of the report at the link below and consider sharing it to support a more inclusive NJ media environment. #diversity #localnews #newjersey #report #equity #dei #survey https://lnkd.in/eAu3nH4B

  • So proud to house the Asian Media Initiative! More often than not we see that large and affinity journalism organizations are not inclusive spaces for dedicated community media journalists. They are often focused on broadcast and national digital outlets and/or do not see the inherent importance and service of community media in a time of mainstream media budget cuts, disinformation, threats to democracy and public health, and loss of trust in the fourth estate - so it is especially heartwarming to be recognized by the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) this year. We hope to continue to advocate for community media publishers who work tirelessly to serve and lead their communities!

I’m so honored to announce that the Asian Media Initiative at The Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY received a Community Impact Award at #AAJA24! In recognition of journalism and journalists that amplify and make space for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, with a special focus on solutions and impact, this award is especially meaningful for our organization. In just 2 years since our launch, AMI has produced the first national map and directory of 670 outlets serving AAPI in 670 languages; a sweeping report on the evolution of AAPI media from 1854 to the present day; peer-to-peer networks and specialized trainings; public events on disinformation, covering hate crimes and gender-based violence, press freedom and safety, women journalists in AAPI media, and the centennial of the Johnson-Reed Act barring immigrants from Asia; and cohorts on fundraising and election reporting on battleground states in collaboration with the Black and Latino Media Initiatives. We are preparing to launch a resource guide on press freedom and safety in AAPI media, and on AAPI-led movements this election season. We are honored to be able to uplift and support the incredible AAPI media outlets that serve our communities so tirelessly. This year’s #AAJA24 was such a rich and rewarding experience, from ideas and innovation at the third annual nonprofit summit, to our panel on investing in community media, to the release of the AAPI style guide (I had served on the committee for it), and the joyful mixers and gala. I can’t wait to see you all again next year in Houston!

Asian American community media journalists experience unique threats to their safety and press freedom. They face surveillance and censorship both from the U.S. and from overseas governments, and endure harassment and repression both from within and from outside of their communities. On July 30, the Asian Media Initiative is hosting a forum on Safety and Press Freedom within AAPI Media, bringing AAPI community journalists into dialogue with experts on surveillance, transnational repression, press freedom, and journalist safety. Join us: https://lnkd.in/dJfSCUkP If you are an AAPI community media journalist and would like to share your experiences anonymously, please fill out this short questionnaire: https://lnkd.in/du4T43_4 NOTE: Given the sensitivity of this topic, this session will NOT be recorded.
