What does a Community Health Worker do? Community health workers (CHWs) are frontline public health workers who develop a relationship with the communities they serve, allowing them to function as a connector between community members and health or social services. CHWs facilitate access to resources and improve the cultural competence of services provided. They work alongside many individual and community developers to deliver and promote community empowerment and social justice. CHWs work in a variety of geographic and cultural settings. What a does a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technologist do? Sterile Processing and Distribution Technologists are responsible for cleaning and maintaining surgical tools and hospital equipment. It is their job to make sure that the sterilized tools are then organized into trays containing the instruments required for routine or special surgeries. They are also responsible for checking equipment to make sure it is in good repair and up to date. Sterile processing and distribution technologists might also stock crash carts. Cleveland Clinic School of Phlebotomy The School of Phlebotomy course of study is designed to prepare students for the ever-changing field of phlebotomy. Phlebotomists serve a more vital role than ever before in the care of patients due to the increased demand to provide patient samples for diagnostic testing. The School of Phlebotomy guarantees placement for up to 12 students each academic session, with up to four of the students being placed at a Cleveland Clinic hospital or family health center for their clinical experience. Academic Sessions are held three times a year in January, May, and September. Meet Carlos, an international Computer Science major at Cleveland State University from El Salvador! He’s a senior and part of the accelerated BS/MSC program, completing his higher education in just five years! Carlos began his journey at the Cleveland Clinic in 2023, as part of the first cohort of the Discovery Accelerator (DA) undergraduate research internship in partnership with IBM. In Spring 2024, he returned to the clinic as an undergraduate researcher at the Program for Advanced Musculoskeletal Imaging (PAMI), where he worked on developing novel approaches using quantum computing for medical imaging. Carlos is continuing his research and serving as an Administrative College Intern for CYCE, helping manage the first cohort of the Advanced Technology track and the Discovery Accelerator/IBM interns! Meet Ethan, a rising senior at Brandeis University majoring in Biology and Public Health. This summer, he’s back at the Cleveland Clinic as an Administrative College Intern for the CYCE Science Summer Internship Program. Ethan’s journey began as a high school intern in the same program back in 2019. His passion for health sciences has only grown since then. Post-graduation, Ethan aims to pursue an MPH (Master of Public Health) to further his career and make a positive impact on public health.
