IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK: The youngest pandemic children are now in school, and many are showing signs of being academically and developmentally behind. Although it’s still unknown whether young children will experience long-term effects from the pandemic, researchers remain optimistic. “It is absolutely possible to catch up, if we catch things early,” said Dr. Dani Dumitriu, a pediatrician and neuroscientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and chair of the study on pandemic newborns. Dr. Dumitriu also told The New York Times that the pandemic may have had some benefits for young children, such as increased resiliency and more time with family. The Department of Pediatrics leadership and division administrators recently volunteered with the West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH) in Washington Heights. Our team assembled and packed food bags filled with produce and shelf-stable items – an incredibly rewarding experience, that allowed our team to support the local community in a tangible and impactful way. Since its founding in 1979, WSCAH has pioneered innovative approaches to food distribution, including creating the first customer-choice supermarket-style pantry in the U.S. and launching the Mobile Market partnership to bring healthy food to customers' neighborhoods. #foodinsecurity #communitysupport #washingtonheights #fooddistribution
