Astonishing! Just astonishing! First off, that the young man had access to firearms, according to dad “they’re not loaded”. I can’t wrap my head around that response. Then for his first gun he buys for the boy is a gun in the AR platform. According to dad for deer hunting. I realize many use that layout, effectively with limited 5 round magazines for large game. But for a “first gun”? for a boy? And a boy with emotional issues? Com’on, let's use our heads. An autoloader, especially in the AR platform is not a good choice for a first gun. If there are guns in the house, put the kids through a hunter safety program. Even if you don’t plan on hunting. They will learn good solid firearm safety and responsible ownership. And judging by what i have read and heard as with this parent, many parent(s) and adults would benefit getting some gun safety instruction and responsible ownership from their children that go through such a program. I’ll say it because many times while working with young people. Dad’s manhood comes bubbling to the top. Keep that in check. Lock up your guns and check regularly for finagling. https://lnkd.in/gvxK5q5p

You got children, even young adult children….LOCK UP YOUR GUNS. Know or learn firearm safety and TEACH them; 1. Never store a gun loaded and ready to go. 2. A safe gun is one that is pointed in a safe direction...period! 3. Don’t load a gun until you are ready to use it. 4. Finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot. 5. When picking up the gun or handing a gun to someone, open and clear the action. Muzzle up – Actions Open This is not about freedom and rights; it’s about doing the right thing and keeping kids safe. I will never – ever get used to this. It is so preventable. Two lives that we’ll never know the measure of, never go to college, have children, or contribute to society. https://lnkd.in/gp9iHvPm

Watching the Olympic air pistol and how many have eye dominance correction on their eye wear. Of the squad I watched, looked as though all had a correction. Then, the shooter from Turkey who looked as though he just came in off the street to shoot, notice that he has his hand casually in his pocket. I find it interesting how each individual sees a target, as well as their approach and demeanor.

I'll say it....the problems in Scouts is NOT the kids, it's us the adults that simply muck things up. Here is an incident that may have contributed to the recent BSA Shooting Sports change-up. Additionally, I have personally many times over the years directly overheard and or was directly told from fellow scoutmasters (from other units) that they had held shooting events on private property in direct violation of the shooting sports protocols, very similar to the events in Hawaii. BSA is using an incident in Hawaii that is was tragic as the catalyst for the changes. This is what the local Chair found out of compliance and negligent: 1. Violated limits on caliber for Scouts BSA 2. Violated limits on magazine types 3. Guns were left in an unsupervised state 4. Loaded firearms were off the firing line 5. Failure to properly clear a rifle 6. Non-BSA firearms on BSA property 7. Apparently there were issues with types of targets used, but that should not have contributed to the incident. 8. No action taken after negligent discharge earlier in the day. 9. Apparently no RSO. https://lnkd.in/gA7PiCpa

UNINTENTIONAL DISCHARGE At a recent NSCA tournament there was an unintentional shotgun discharge. Fortunately, the gun was pointed in a safe direction when it was discharged. It was an automatic, and was malfunctioning during the competition. The competitor thought the gun was cleared, with the action open exited the field. The competitor went to an area that they thought was safe to work on the gun, including breaking it down. Not realizing that a shell was either in the magazine or the lower chamber upon closing the bolt, the gun discharged. What should have been done? A golden rule other than “gun pointed in a safe direction” is at ALL TIMES to break down a malfunctioning gun that still has a shell “somewhere” within the gun, AT THE FIRING LINE WITH THE GUN DOWN RANGE. NEVER EVER leave the range with a round in the gun. Events like this do have positive outcomes, it perks our safety awareness. Going forward those of us that shoot autoloaders become acutely aware of this potential malfunction and take that extra moment to verify the gun is clear and completely unloaded before exiting the field. And if not, break the gun down before exiting the field. A connecting thought, one should never store a loaded firearm. Store with actions open.
