Skinsights: The damaging effects of visible light and how antioxidants can help mitigate them. Many patients, and even some dermatologists, are unaware that visible light (VL) from the sun is actually harmful and that not all broad-spectrum sunscreens contain protection from VL-induced free radicals. It has been clinically proven that VL generates reactive oxygen species in all skin tones; this excess of free radicals manifests as skin damage and pigmentary disorders. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, FAAD, Board-Certified Dermatologist in Miami, FL, shares her insights about incorporating antioxidants like glycyrrhetinic acid and licochalcone A in sunscreens to protect against VL-induced free radical damage. To read the full publication, visit: bit.ly/impactofVL. Skinsights features insights on clinical data and publications unveiled by dermatology experts. Dermatologists have long been concerned with the impact of UV light on skin health. Recent research has elucidated the differential effects of UVA, UVB, and visible light (VL) on skin. Lim, et al review the way VL affects lighter and darker skin types, and what we can do to help prevent VL-related skin damage: bit.ly/impactofVL. Rigel, et al present evidence that people with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI may require additional protection from VL-induced sun damage—and how antioxidants can help: bit.ly/Photoprotectiongaps. Later this month, Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, FAAD, will share her thoughts on these topics, and ways to offer people of all skin tones more complete photoprotection. #Skinsights
