I was privileged to be part of a panel about fact-checking and verification during a breakout session at the East-West Center International Media Conference earlier this week. With me on the panel are other experts in their field, Art Min from TrueMedia.Org which developed a closed-beta deepfake detector tool; Syed Nazakat from DataLEADS who ran a fact-checking group of over a hundred journalists and dozens of newsrooms during India's elections earlier this year; and our moderator, David U. from the University of Hawaii. I am grateful and humbled to represent GMA Integrated News' fact-checking initiatives in daily reports and the verification of user-generated content featured on social media and in other newscasts. It will certainly be more challenging with the rise of deepfakes and the upcoming senatorial elections, but that's all the more reason why we keep doing what we do and making sure that debunking and prebunking mis/disinformation remains crucial in newsrooms.

Amid the backdrop of daily headlines about confrontations between Filipino and Chinese naval personnel in the South China Sea, Philippines Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo and US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson highlighted longstanding ties between their two countries in back-to-back remarks at the East-West Center International Media Conference in Manila on Wednesday. The two senior diplomats also painted each of their nations as champions of press freedom, even as false information and digital fakes increasingly proliferate with the help of artificial intelligence. The power-packed panel discussion among journalists from India and Pakistan on "Journalism Beyond Borders" highlights triumphs, challenges and prospects of cross border collaboration on reporting on issues of mutual interest to make a difference in the lives of the people of the two countries. It also explores how journalists from India and Pakistan and beyond can collaborate towards impactful storytelling across borders and about South Asia as a whole. This breakout session also marked the culmination and resounding success of this year's International Media Conference (IMC) 2024 at Philippines International Convention Centre (PICC) in Manila, Philippines, which brought journalists, diplomats, experts and Nobel laureates together to discuss critical issues impacting the existence of the living beings on earth, air and deep seas. Yesterday was the first day of the East-West International Media Conference held in Manila with the theme "The Future of Facts." It's no secret that the perception of what "fact" is has been changing in this social-media driven world where bad actors continue to manipulate the narrative to fit their agenda, but I want to highlight that it's the very reason journalists and members of the media should continue to fight mis/disinformation on the very platforms in which they spread. We are a social media nation. Over 100 million Filipinos in the country and Meltwater says about 86 million social media users as of January 2024. However, the fight for media literacy, ensuring the public understands social media algorithms, the rise of deepfakes, and the use of AI to continuously battle mis/disinformation, is even more important with the upcoming 2025 elections. With that, I will be speaking about fact-checking and verification today, the second day of the conference, while Theodore Jason Patrick and Mariz Umali will discuss digital strategies for newsrooms in the breakout sessions. Sir Howie Severino will also discuss the future of newsrooms during the conference.
