Brian is a senior applications engineer specializing in water and environmental modeling. With over 15 years of experience across private, public, and academic sectors, he utilizes 3D CFD modeling techniques for projects such as fish passage, river restoration, bridge scour analysis, sediment transport modeling, and hydraulic structure analysis. Karthik is a senior CFD engineer focusing on modeling water civil infrastructure and multiphysics applications with FLOW-3D HYDRO. He holds an M.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he specialized in experimental and computational fluid mechanics. In this FLOW-3D HYDRO spillway example, the moving object physics incorporates a prescribed motion to simulate the sequential opening of tainter gates. While this example models a dynamic gate opening scenario, a similar steady-state model could be used to develop a rating curve of spillway capacities at various combinations of upstream water levels and fixed gate positions to assist with dam operating scenarios. 🌍 Gearing up for #ICOLD2024! 🌊 As we prepare for this year's conference, we're inspired by the themes of Sustainability, Innovation, and Community Impact. 🌱💡🤝 🔍 Spotlight on Dog River Dam: The Dog River Reservoir serves as a primary raw water storage for communities in Douglas County, GA. Growing demand for increased water supply and storage, along with changes to Georgia’s precipitation and hydrology models, necessitated a raise of the dam embankment and a redesign and relocation of the labyrinth spillway. FLOW-3D HYDRO allowed Freese and Nichols to efficiently compare labyrinth weir design alternatives, as well as alternative designs for other components of the project, including the low-level outlet, bridge pier, spillway chute, training wall, and stilling basin.
