We are delighted to announce that Dr. Sung Hwan Park has joined the Materials Discovery Research Institute (MDRI) as part of the In(Organic) and Hybrid Materials group, led by Dr. Timur Islamoglu. Dr. Park’s impressive background and innovative approach will be invaluable as we strive to develop materials that align with our mission to build resilience for a sustainable future. His work will be crucial in our efforts to develop novel materials for applications such as direct air carbon capture and water harvesting. It's #ShowYourStripes Day, and we are sharing our commitment to the need for urgent action to combat the effects of climate change. Our Materials Discovery Research Institute (MDRI) not only works to undo some of the harm that’s been done through over 170 years of reliance on fossil fuels technology, but also looks at new, cheaper, safer alternative fuels and storage. We’re working on technologies such as direct air carbon capture, where we’re looking to remove carbon from the air that surrounds us. We are growing! We’re delighted to welcome Conor Brew and Stefanie Surdyka have joined the MDRI team as Research Scientists I. Conor joined us in April and comes to MDRI with a Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Northwestern University. His expertise will greatly enhance our research capabilities. Stefanie, joining us fresh from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, became part of our team in June. Her skills in various analytical techniques make her an excellent addition to our institute. Welcome to the team Conor and Stefanie!

Piece by piece, the Materials Discovery Research Institute (MDRI) is building the most advanced materials science lab in the country.   Here, MDRI Lead Research Scientist Jeff (Jinfeng) Wu and Research Scientist Uzoma Nwabara are working with our newly installed NanoPrinter from VSPARTICLE - one of the first of its kind installed worldwide — as it vaporizes two separate metals into nanoparticles to create and print a hybrid metal. This technology combines the generation, combination, and deposition of nanoparticles in one automated process to accelerate materials discovery for various energy storage applications. #MDRI #MaterialsDiscovery #RenewablesEnergy #Sustainability

The future of safety science is in our classrooms today and that's why partnering with scientists and researchers across our research institutes to bring real-world phenomena into the classroom is so key. Last week, while the OREE team was in Chicago for our all-team meeting, we were honored to get an early look at MDRI's laboratory in Skokie, Illinois.
