From buildings to bridges to the vehicles that get us across town or between continents, our modern world is constructed with steel. What many people don’t know is that steelmaking is a significant contributor to emissions, worsening the climate crisis. In Sweden, I learned how H2 Green Steel is taking on this enormous challenge with a process that eliminates 95% of the emissions generated from steel production. They’re helping Microsoft build greener data centers and making an impact wherever this critical building material is used. Henrik Henriksson

Corporate Vice President, AI at Work @ Microsoft | Predicting, shaping and innovating for the future of work | Tech optimist

If you're unsure where to start with #AI for your business, focus on understanding the most powerful tool in your arsenal: the AI system itself. While foundational models like large language models (LLMs) often steal the spotlight, they’re just one part of a broader AI ecosystem. Think of the LLM as the engine but remember that a car needs more than just an engine to hit the road.      In my latest LinkedIn newsletter, I break down the core components of an AI system, from user experience to specialized skills, and how they all work together to bring AI to life in your business. Whether you’re in healthcare, automotive, or any other industry, this is your roadmap to understanding how AI can power your business.      Ready to look under the hood and see what AI can really do for you? Dive in here and be sure to subscribe for more insights coming soon. ⬇️    #AIForBusiness #FutureOfWork

Standards. Systems. Resources. It’s been 5 years since the launch of Microsoft’s Office of Responsible AI – one of the first of its kind to actively promote the integration of responsible AI at every level of our efforts, policies, and initiatives. Long before AI became a buzzword, we believed in its potential to uplift communities and help us solve our most urgent global challenges. However, we were also mindful of the risks associated with AI technology, risks that are now all too visible with the rise of deepfakes and disinformation – especially in the midst of this historic election year. From the start, we’ve been steadfast in our commitment to implementing the appropriate regulations and safeguards to mitigate these risks. Our goal is a brighter future, not a dystopian world where technology erodes our trust and collaboration. As we celebrate our 5-year milestone, we’re sharing 5 key efforts the team has made to advance responsible AI. Looking ahead, we’ll continue to drive this mission forward, guided by our core principles of fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. #ResponsibleAI #CyberSecurity #TechPolicy #PublicSafety

  • Microsoft observed Iranian state-sponsored threat actor Peach Sandstorm deploying a new custom multi-stage backdoor named Tickler in attacks against the satellite, communications equipment, oil and gas, as well as federal and state government sectors in the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Tickler is capable of running various commands and collecting information from target devices. Microsoft assesses that Peach Sandstorm operates on behalf of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) based on the group’s victimology and operational focus. Peach Sandstorm was also observed to launch password spray attacks against their targets and leverage compromised accounts to procure operational infrastructure. The attacker-controlled infrastructure is then used as command-and-control (C2) for Peach Sandstorm operations. Microsoft also observed intelligence gathering and possible social engineering targeting organizations within the higher education, satellite, and defense sectors via LinkedIn. Our blog presents information on Peach Sandstorm's use of Tickler and the threat actor's evolving tradecraft, as well as guidance for how organizations can harden their attack surfaces against related attacks. https://msft.it/6042lfpyI

Five years ago, Microsoft created the Office of Responsible AI, a major step in our efforts to advance AI responsibly. It's been an incredible privilege to lead this team over the past five years and to oversee the tremendous growth we've experienced. We've built a governance system across the company that harnesses the very best of research, policy, and engineering. And our work has shown that incorporating guardrails for AI systems doesn't just make for a responsible product, it makes for a better product overall.      In the Office of Responsible AI, we're tasked with looking at the big picture: how might this AI system be used, for good or for ill, months or years from now? But we're also in the weeds of AI systems Microsoft develops and deploys, ensuring humans are kept in the loop and risks are identified and mitigated. By incorporating responsible AI from the earliest stages of a product, we've helped Microsoft ship thousands of AI systems safely.      This work is often challenging, and there are many unknowns ahead, but there's no team I would rather be on this journey with. I'm proud to be leading this work because I'm optimistic that AI, if governed effectively, can enhance human potential and solve some of society's greatest problems. This is undoubtedly a tall order, but I believe we're up for the challenge. aka.ms/5yearsOfORA
