During patient handovers, closed-loop communication is crucial to ensure that information is accurately received and acknowledged. In veterinary patient care handovers, this practice helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that critical information is accurately communicated and received by all relevant team members. At BluePearl, we implement the IPASS system to identify Illness Severity, Patient Summary, Action List, Situational Awareness/Contingency Planning, and Synthesis by Receiver. Over the past few years, our Medical Quality team has instituted important initiatives around CPR preparedness, barotrauma prevention, patient handoffs, and checklists. Take a look at each of these initiatives and how they positively impact patient safety at BluePearl. ✅ CPR Preparedness initiative: CPR is one of the most time-sensitive tasks that our Associates do, so preparation is imperative. Using checklist templates and CPR preparedness resources, this initiative emphasized the importance of ensuring every crash cart is 100% stocked, 100% of the time. ✅ Barotrauma Prevention initiative: We adopted a new Anesthesia Equipment Safety Standard to require all BluePearl anesthesia machines to have integrated or installed safety valves to reduce the risk of barotrauma to patients undergoing general anesthesia. ✅ Patient Handoff initiative: The transfer of patient care from one caregiver to another involves communicating crucial, thorough information regarding that patient. This initiative introduced I-PASS, a tool specifically used in human healthcare to ensure relevant patient information is passed in a complete and efficient manner. ✅ Checklist initiative: Starting with the Safe Surgery Saves Lives campaign by the World Health Organization, checklists have proven to be an impactful and effective tool to improve patient safety in human healthcare. For this initiative, we created adaptable checklists for our pet patients undergoing anesthesia or sedation. Not only do anesthesia checklists improve patient safety, but they also have been shown to improve communication and teamwork. #BluePearlMedicalQuality #PatientSafetyAwarenessWeek #ElevatingVetMed

To honor K9 Veteran’s Day, we’re pleased to announce the Veterinary Trauma Readiness and Operational Medicine Agility (Vet-TROMA) program, in partnership with the U.S. Army Office of the Surgeon General and U.S. Army Veterinary Corps.
