The Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP) is focused on the Great Lakes being held in Detroit, MI this year on September 24-26, 2024. HSRP is a key federal advisory committee that provides NOAA with independent advice to enhance the quality, efficiency, and usefulness of navigation-related products and services. The HSRP offers valuable insights on various programs, including:  📍 Navigation (e.g., nautical charts and ENCs)  🌊 Physical oceanography (e.g., tides and water levels)  🗺 Geospatial, positioning, and coastal & shoreline programs Each year, the HSRP hosts two public meetings in different port regions, actively seeking input from stakeholders and partners. From June 24th to July 21st, NOAA’s Center of Excellence for Ocean and Great Lakes Mapping partnered with seven academic institutions to provide undergraduate and graduate students and their academic advisors the opportunity to sail aboard NOAA Ship Nancy Foster on student-focused mapping cruises. The seven institutions represented were Cape Fear Community College, College of Charleston, Northwestern Michigan College, Stockton University, University of New Hampshire, University of South Florida, and University of Southern Mississippi. Over the course of three 7-8 day legs, 25 students and 2 academic staff members sailed aboard the ship. The students all came from academic backgrounds in mapping and other marine science programs. Students’ prior experience ranged from having never been to sea before to having sailed numerous times on mapping cruises. They were able to learn data acquisition and processing techniques, see marine life, and learn all about life at sea. The primary goal of these cruises was to provide a training opportunity for the students, with a secondary goal of continuing to acquire data in a NOMEC priority area on the Blake Plateau, approximately 60 nautical miles east of Charleston, SC. #NOAA #STEMEducation #NOAAShipNancyFoster

Happy National Lighthouse day! The main purpose of a lighthouse is as a navigation aid notifying mariners of dangerous shallows, rocky coast, and important locations by using bright lights and/or fog horns. The messages are simple: “STAY AWAY”, “DANGER”, “BEWARE!”, or “COME THIS WAY!” Today, lighthouses continue to guide mariners however lighted navigational aids, buoys, radar beacons, and other aids to navigation are also used to aid safe navigation.
