📣 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) just announced the first ever SUPER Rapid Turnaround Experiment (RTE) awards. The awarded projects will advance the development of nuclear fuels and materials such as silicon carbide composites, TRISO fuel, and advanced stainless steel. Projects will also research manufacturing and welding technologies for potential use in current light-water reactors and future advanced nuclear reactors. Awardees will have up to a year to complete experiments using world-class testing capabilities provided through NSUF. These capabilities are equal to approximately $1.8 million in support and are provided at no cost to the researchers. Understanding the mechanisms that govern grain boundary behavior is crucial for enhancing uranium dioxide (UO2) to achieve better fuel performance and longevity. As such, significant focus has been directed toward integrating grain boundary diffusional process details into multiscale models for predicting nuclear fuel evolution. In this research by Shen Dillon and the team at UC Irvine, The University of New Mexico, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, sintering-induced densification and grain boundary sliding in UO2 are quantified through in situ observation, with the nucleation rate limited creep model evaluated by the relevance of the derived physical properties. 🔬 In situ transmission electron microscopy was performed at Sandia National Laboratories and supported through NSUF Rapid Turnaround Experiment # 20-3091. Nuclear reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) are critical components that must maintain structural integrity over their entire operational lifespan, as replacement is a highly complex and resource-intensive process. A recent study published in the Journal of Nuclear Materials examining PM-HIP SA508, a low-alloy RPV steel produced using the powder metallurgy process and hot isostatic pressing, shows promise for RPV longevity. This study from Wen Jiang and the research team at Purdue University, Boise State University, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), Idaho National Laboratory, and the Electric Power Research Institute, provides a direct parallel comparison between PM-HIP and forged SA508 Grade 3 Class 1 low-alloy RPV steel under neutron irradiation. Work on this project was part of Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research award # 15-8242. Meet Idaho National Laboratory's new supercomputer: Bitterroot 👋 Bitterroot is a Dell-based, CTS-2 system and offers more than 43,000 processing cores with 3 petaflops of performance. It’s also the first system supported by our Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) to offer high-bandwidth memory, which speeds up computations in applications that were previously slowed down by bandwidth limitations. Bitterroot was brought online to help the lab keep pace with the growing demand for modeling and simulation applications and can be accessed through NSUF to support the nation’s nuclear energy-related research projects at no cost to the user.

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has long been one of the world’s best X-ray light sources. Now, with a comprehensive upgrade nearly completed, the renewed APS is emerging brighter than ever. Its new X-ray beams will be up to 500 times brighter than before. Since then, it has been used by thousands of scientists over the years to conduct experiments for the betterment of humankind. NSUF provides a suite of dedicated computing resources for researchers from industry, universities, national laboratories and federal agencies. Now, with the installation of Bitterroot, the NSUF High Performance Computing team at Idaho National Laboratory has another resource to help speed the journey for nuclear developers around the country.
