Today on the #PCMAConvenePod, we are talking all about travel times and providing ample information about the local airport to event delegates. #EventProfs may not be able to predict tech outages that would ground flights around the world, as it happened today, but #PCMAConvene editors discuss pain points within the event planners' control. Last year, a Reddit user who was helping to plan for a booth at a conference asked the online academic community on the social website for suggestions on swag. “We are trying to come up with swag people will actually like/keep,” she posted. “Ideas?” More than 100 people shared details on the best swag they had ever received. A Swiss army knife was the favorite swag of one user, and he begged the original poster: “Please no more: bags, pens, water bottles, shitty plastic flashlights, lanyards, mugs, or buttons.” While there were plenty of responses that echoed his sentiment to eschew cheap tchotchkes, there was only one solitary community member who brought up sustainability. “90% will end up in the trash, so I’d say none or opt for consumables,” she wrote. From residents complaining about the crowds in Kyoto (June 7 https://lnkd.in/dfGHDY-i), to the recent news about locals squirting tourists with water guns in Barcelona (July 10 https://lnkd.in/d4dr3MXW). 📖 Wondering what role business events play in this crisis? Check out our cover story from September 2019. Our editors, Jennifer Dienst and Barbara Bruns Palmer, wrote "Crowd Control," a piece that feels just as relevant today. Are we not making progress, or are we not learning our lessons? 🤞𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝. 🤔 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝. 😟𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭. 💡These were the three constructs used by 100 C-suite executives and event team leaders to navigate seven disruption scenarios during “Future-Proofing the Events Industry,” a PCMA Executive Leadership Summit. The participants were invited to workshop solutions to challenges presented at the summit, held in conjunction with PCMA Convening Leaders 2024 in January in San Diego, by responding in ways that ranged from easy-to-execute to “just so crazy they may just work.” ✈️ The first scenario presented: “A No-Fly Zone.” Participants were asked to consider the following: Worries about air travel’s contribution to global CO2 emissions 🌍are prompting organizations to consider curtailing air travel for employees to attend meetings and events and consider digital-only options. How would you build a proactive plan to address these concerns? 📋 Find the highlights from the conversation in Michelle Russell's article: https://lnkd.in/dey3HRqt #PCMAConvene #EventProfs #CL24

In a two-part edUcon workshop, strategist and coach Yvette Simpson aimed to help attendees discover the true purpose of their work. She reminded the audience, not to leave out questions like ‘Okay, I’m a person when I go to work, so how do I connect the work that I do to my greater purpose? How do I make sure that I’m passionate about what I’m doing?’ If you missed the workshops, read Jennifer Dienst's article: https://lnkd.in/dhSyrF-u Image by Whatever Media Group. #PCMAConvene #EventProfs #PCMAEC

In June 2019, Marc Forgette launched Makatew Workshops, with a facility in Carp, Ontario, Canada, where groups of up to 30 people can participate in hands-on activities, such as moccasin-, mitten-, and dreamcatcher-making. In addition to hosting these workshops in Carp, Forgette brings them — and Indigenous education — to other places, from grade school and university classrooms to event venues hosting corporate and association meetings and trade shows. Typical workshops, Forgette said, last around 90 minutes, and can cater to groups of all sizes. Medicine bags, the first item Makatew Workshops introduced, remain the most popular craft to this day, with more than 15,000 sold in the last five years. During the workshop, participants are not taught how to sew leather for the bags but rather assemble kits that come with pre-cut stitch holes, made from locally sourced white-tail deer leather, hand-beaded by an Indigenous maker. Making the craft from scratch isn’t the objective, Forgette said. “I want them to be focused on the message.” The full story by Casey Gale is part of the #PCMAConvene CMP series - https://lnkd.in/dDYSTqj7 #EventProfs #Makers #CMP #Indigenous #Education
