The ocean covers over two-thirds of our planet. It produces a significant percentage of the planet's oxygen and contains 97% of the planet's water, with only 3% as freshwater. United Nations hallmarks the ocean as the world's greatest ally against climate change. The reason – it's ability to absorb carbon dioxide. Aquatic habitats like seagrasses and mangroves are responsible for reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by absorbing CO2 at a rate higher than forests can. Additionally, seafood is a key ingredient to providing a lower carbon, climate friendly animal-based protein for the future. Choosing #seafood from sustainable fisheries is a considerable effort consumers can make towards a greener lifestyle. For businesses who work in tandem with our ocean, conscious sustainability efforts can take form in achieving sustainable fisheries or seafood certifications, such as Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). For those who work with freshwater, ensuring sustainable practices that meet stringent benchmarks shows commitment to water stewardship and a healthier, eco-friendly planet. Happy World Oceans Day!
