U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations reposted this
At the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, a joint team of DSS and U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations security professionals completed a long-overdue project to make the embassy's four main doors American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. Our diverse team of American, Australian, Filipino, and Thai employees pulled long hours over a holiday weekend to update door hinges, install hydraulic hardware, and re-wire power systems. With each door weighing over 600lbs, the project required a significant amount of planning and expertise to ensure the new accessibility features properly interacted with existing security systems. The updates were an important initiative to Ambassador Robert Godec, who joined the embassy’s #DEIA Group for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the successful completion of the project. The new accessibility features make the embassy more welcoming by giving all staff and visitors the ability to move through the embassy without assistance. So, while it may look like just a small blue button with a wheelchair, our DSS technical security teams know that these upgrades make a world of difference in improving accessibility while maintaining security at America’s diplomatic facilities overseas.

OBO is making significant strides in enhancing project delivery by moving away from outdated, siloed methods and adopting cutting-edge technology to ensure long-term operational efficiency. This important work was featured in this month's publication of State Magazine, authored by Lauren E. Frank, IIDA, LEED AP, LSS GB, Alyssa Lapan, and Tom Burgess, PMP. An excerpt: "A key element of [OBO's] transformation is the adoption of Kahua, a cloud-based project management system that facilitates real-time collaboration. This investment improves resource management, ensures consistent project delivery, and accelerates response times for American diplomatic facilities worldwide. OBO's focus on long-term planning and continuous improvement reflects its commitment to modernization. These efforts align with Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s Modernization Agenda, positioning OBO to meet the evolving needs of the Foreign Service and ensuring the bureau remains at the forefront of technological and procedural advancements."
