Efficient Decor: The Most Versatile Accessories
Decorate your home creatively and affordably with these efficient decorative accessories. With this versatile decor, you can change it up without too much time or money!
I recently shared my favorite canisters on Instagram… several times…. And I laughed at myself that I used them in about 30 different ways because I believe in “efficient décor.” I sort of meant it in jest, but a dear friend of mine suggested that would make a great post, and I love the idea!
Obviously I like to decorate. And I like to redecorate often. But as a self-proclaimed efficiency freak – and a wannabe minimalist – I struggle with the amount of stuff it takes to do that. In an attempt to streamline my decorative accents, I’ve found a few go-to items that can be used in multiple ways, and it’s awesome. It saves space, money, and time when I know these items can perform double or even triple duty.

Pretty canisters
I’m rather in love with copper these days, so it’s no surprise that I love these copper canisters. I’ve used them to hold oat flour and nuts in the kitchen…
To corral my cooking utensils…
To display flowers…
And even to serve snacks. As an added bonus, they’re not breakable, which is such a help in a house full of kids! And the cool thing about canister sets is that they come in so many sizes, shapes, and colors, you’re sure to find some to match your home’s style.

Baskets
I almost feel bad writing this because it seems so obvious… but baskets can be used for almost anything! See the one above my china cabinet? It holds all the finger paints, hot glue guns, and glitter that I don’t want my kids using without my supervision. Hidden in a basket, though, you’d never know there was anything more than simple decoration.
I also have baskets holding my fig trees…
My baby’s toys…
and table linens…
And shallow baskets can double as wall art…
And centerpieces for dining or coffee tables…

Turkish towels
These are becoming my favorite accessories almost year round. I usually put them away at the heart of winter just because the stripes and fringe feels a bit summery to me, but they honestly could stay out all the time. We use them to dry off after a swim…
To snuggle under on the sofa…
And to add texture and warmth to our home. As an added bonus, they are usually quite thin and therefore if you do decide to store them for part of the year, they don’t take up nearly as much space as most throw blankets.

Mirrors
Mirrors are so classic: functional, light-giving, the ultimate “neutral” in a way. I think my favorite thing about them, though, is that they can so easily be moved from one space to another. Bathrooms, obviously…
Bedrooms…
or living spaces…
And they don’t have to be very permanent either: just lean it up against the wall or mantel for a temporary display and move it elsewhere next month.

Potted plants
Like mirrors (but better!), potted plants are simply so very versatile. Trees are a little bit limiting due to size, but even these 6’+ fiddle leaf figs make their way around my home…
And smaller potted plants can grace bookshelves…
Sit on the floor…
Act as centerpieces or even live in the shower… The possibilities are seriously endless!
I tend to prefer real plants to faux (I admit that I may be becoming a crazy plant lady!)… but I am definitely not above using a good faux plant in spaces where the lighting isn’t right or watering is difficult. If you prefer a faux plant, I’ve pulled together some of my favorites.

Do I still have a favorite set of chunky wood candlesticks? Sure. Do they serve any other purpose that to look pretty? Nope (though they do look pretty almost anywhere I put them, which is a bonus 😉 ). So while there are exceptions, obviously, I hope these ideas have helped you think through how you can be a little more efficient in your decorating.
Don’t forget to pin it!
I know you’ve heard it before, but your home is gorgeous! So tranquil and serene. These are very good tips. Why didn’t I think of that? Lol! Thanks for sharing and inspiring.
Thank you, Maggie! I’m so glad you found it helpful. 🙂
Thank you for ideas that are simple but good to use in all our decor. It’s good to open my mind to what i have and how to use it. I am tired of having so much stuff and am giving it away or selling and it looks so much nicer in my home now. You are really good at styling your beautiful home.
Thank you, Marlene. Less truly is more!
Hi Rachel,
While my children were growing, we had a basket by the back door for shoes. Even the children visiting dropped their shoes in the basket. As we were dashing out the door, the shoes were always in the same place. A place for everything and everything in its place!
Oh that baby!
That is such a great idea Barbara! We like collecting shoes in the same place too! Saves so much time.
You are so creative! It wouldn’t have occurred to me to use a basket as wall art. Copper and gold are my favorite metals so I love that you featured the copper canisters in so many different ways.
Thanks Sukhi! I’m glad it inspired you!
Loved everything, and the baby in absolutely gorgeous!💗
