Part 2: Luka Doncic Reaction
Part 2 features Sid’s more detailed analysis of game 2 of the NBA Finals. In Game 2, Luka Doncic continued to showcase his offensive prowess, cooking the Celtics’ defense, and this time adding double digit assists after being held to 1 assist in game 1, while his teammate Kyrie Irving struggled to find his rhythm against his former team.
Some notes:
- We draw parallels between Kyrie Irving’s current challenges and his experiences in the 2016 and 2017 Finals with the Cavaliers. Irving started both those series shooting poorly from the field, only to blow up starting game 3 onwards. Irving has been remembered as being stellar throughout those finals, even though he was killed after the first 2 games. If there’s anyone on Dallas who knows how to turn a series around against a juggernaut while playing a contrasting style next to a ball dominant superstar, it’s him.
Kyrie didn’t play well in games 1 and 2 of the 2016 and 2017 NBA finals either.

Followed up 26 in game 1, 10 in game 2 with 30p 8a, 34, 41 in 2016.
Followed up 24 in game 1, 19 in game 2 with 38 and 40 in 2017. https://t.co/k965svlrtx
- This series has also shown Doncic’s defensive limitations on the perimeter compared to LeBron James’ ability to guard and close out effectively in those finals. Doncic has repeatedly been blown by on drives, and while he can bump players at times and handle them in the post, he seriously struggles to turn his hips and chase them into the paint when they get by him. As legendary a player as he’s already become, Doncic needs to be quicker and lighter on his feet.
Yep, though LeBron was never targeted defensively.

Giant chasm between the two considering LeBron would put up similar offensive production while also being an ELITE positionless defender & secondary rim protector.
Luka needs to improve his lateral quickness & agility. https://t.co/EGP185ZtKS
- While the Celtics went cold from 3, the Mavericks’ defensive adjustments, particularly in closing out on shooters, did help even out the math battle.
- PJ Washington’s aggressive play against closeouts was impressive, as he exploited his matchup with the shorter Derrick White to get 17 points on 13 shots.
- Dallas’ poor free throw shooting was costly.
- Daniel Gafford got going in the 2nd half, but Maxi Kleber and Derek Lively did not.
