Lando Norris has taken pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the third of his life and the second of 2024 after Barcelona, to become the great favorite for victory in Sunday's race.

The Englishman, who comes from wasting several chances to beat Max Verstappen, has had no rival in qualifying and has everything in his favor to achieve the victory and get closer in the Drivers' World Championship, where he sits 84 points behind the Dutchman.

Norris produced the best time on the first attempt of Q3, with a brutal lap that nobody could beat. Oscar Piastri was able to overtake Verstappen who starts the race in third.

Sainz fourth, aiming for the podium

Carlos Sainz gave everything he could and was at the maximum in wet conditions and with less heat than expected.

He managed to improve in the second attempt, before the accident of Yuki Tsunoda, which stopped anyone from improving because no one had new tyres left for another attempt.

Nightmare for Russell and Perez in Q1

The track started a little wet, but the cars were drying it immediately. Sainz was second, very plugged in from the beginning, and Fernando Alonso fifth, after two very solid laps.

It was Checo Perez who crashed at the exit of turn 8 and was out, with the medical car deployed by strong impact. The rain caught the Mexican as the track was drying and he could not have had worse luck, with his Red Bull future certainly now in doubt.

Final surprise

But the track, in the time that was taken to clean up Perez's crash, dried very quickly and everyone went out on track with a new set of slicks. That meant that George Russell, pole-sitter at Silverstone, got knocked out.

The Englishman apologized for not having been quick enough throughout the first round.
