Chelsea avoided a third straight defeat by beating Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in a match where technology played its part.
Trevoh Chalobah headed in the opener at the back post from a corner and the hosts were then denied a second goal when VAR was used to confirm that Cesar Azpilicueta had committed a foul in the build-up.
Saints equalised in the 69th minute when James Ward-Prowse converted a penalty that needed no VAR check, but he was sent off shortly afterwards for a reckless lunge on Jorginho, with Martin Atkinson upgrading his punishment from yellow to red after getting a better look at the incident.
With a man advantage, it was all Chelsea after that as they searched for a winning goal and they found two, which put the game beyond doubt in the closing stages.
It was Timo Werner, author of the disallowed first-half goal, who tapped in the goal that gave the Blues the lead with less than 10 minutes to go after Ross Barkley and Azpilicueta combined well to set him up.
Goaline technology was then used to determine that Ben Chilwell's effort had indeed crossed the line five minutes later after both Romelu Lukaku and Azpilicueta had hit the bar.
