Known to millions as "Dr. Ruth", it was announced on Saturday that Dr. Ruth Westheimerhas passed away at the age of 96.

Her publicist Pierre Lehu shared the news, revealing that the sex therapist passed away in her Manhattan home on Friday.

Known for her diminutive figure, Westheimer shot to fame thanks to her "Sexually Speaking" segment on the WYNY radio network in New York. The segment began in 1980, and sent Westheimer, who had previously spent decades in academia, into public prominence.

Her frank advice and willingness to discuss intimacy helped de-stigmatize the topic for a generation of Americans, with her famed catchphrase "Get some!" endearing her to fans.

From there she became a regular on TV, hosting "The Dr. Ruth Show" in 1983, before moving on to other programs and penning over 45 books.

What is Dr. Ruth Westheimer's net worth?

Thanks to her work as a sex therapist, author and media personality, it's believed that Dr. Ruth Westheimer's net worth was in the region of $3 million.

Her success came after she spent her early life in Germany, the only child of a middle-class Jewish family. She watched her father be taken by the Nazis to the Dachau concentration camp at the age of 10, at which point her mother sent her to Switzerland.

While both her parents died in the Holocaust, she then spent years in a Swiss orphanage before immigrating to British-controlled Mandatory Palestine (now Israel) at the end of WWII.

She later relocated to the United States in 1956, and earned her master's degree in sociology from The New School and her Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University.
