The Major League Baseball (MLB) trade deadline is approaching, marking the end of the period in which teams can make trades to adjust their 40-man rosters.

This year, the deadline is set for Tuesday, July 30, at 6 pm Eastern Time (ET).

Fans who are concerned about potential trades for their teams, especially those in playoff contention looking to strengthen specific positions, should note a slight change from recent years.

Traditionally, the deadline was on July 31 at 4 pm ET. However, the Commissioner's Office has the flexibility to set the deadline between July 28 and August 3 to avoid conflicts with the game schedule.

What is the MLB Trade Deadline?

For those unfamiliar with the trade deadline, it refers to the final date by which MLB teams can trade players on their 40-man roster to other clubs.

After this deadline, players on the 40-man roster can still be placed and claimed on direct waivers, but trades are not permitted beyond the set date and time.

Before 2019, July 31 was known as the non-waiver trade deadline, allowing teams to trade players without going through waivers.

Now, post-deadline trades are not allowed, but minor league players who are not on the 40-man roster can still be transferred between organizations until August 31, provided they were part of an organization before this date to be eligible for postseason play.
