The San Diego Padres have been dealt a tough blow for the rest of their season, as they have lost former Boston Red Sox, Xander Bogaerts who is out indefinitely after it was confirmed that he suffered a fracture in his left shoulder.

According to a report by Dennis Lin of The Athletic, Aruban Bogaerts injured his shoulder during the Padres' series against the Braves in Atlanta earlier this week, where he made a diving catch on a wild pitch. While it is not yet known how long he will be out of action, it is not expected that he will require surgery, although his absence will be several months.

Bogaerts and his difficult 2024 season

Bogaerts was having a pretty bad start to the season by his standards, as up to the time of his injury he was hitting for .219/.265/.316 with an OPS+ of just 69, the worst numbers of his career to this point in the season, with even a negative WAR of -0.1.

The Padres sent the Aruban to the injured list and instead brought up 36-year-old veteran David Patio, who just last week had signed a minor league contract with the SoCal team.

Bogaerts is in just the second year of his 11-year, $280 million mega-contract he signed in 2023 with the Padres, which would keep him in San Diego until he is 40 years old. In his first season, he hit for a .790 OPS with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs, along with an OPS+ of 119, his worst since 2016.
