The NFL is waiting with bated breath for a resolution to the ongoing contract standoff between the Dallas Cowboys and their longtime quarterback Dak Prescott. With no agreement imminent, Prescott seems ready to part ways with the Cowboys at the end of the 2024 season in search of a $60 million per year contract -- which would be a first in NFL history.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has the final say over any and every personnel matter in Dallas, seems unwilling to pay that price to retain Prescott -- even with the Cowboys firmly in a Super Bowl window. The uncertainty around Prescott has led to increasing speculation that his replacement could come from the University of Colorado, where the Buffaloes -- coached by former Cowboys star Deion Sanders -- have high expectations going in to the 2024 NCAA football season.

The Cowboys' clock continues to tick

FOX Sports analyst Nick Wright believes that Jones' business acumen is too sharp to warrant the approval of a $60 million-plus per year contract for Prescott -- especially when receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons need new deals themselves. Due to this, Jones might be eyeing Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Sanders, a Heisman Trophy candidate entering the season, has been regularly projected as a top-20 pick in next year's draft. He will need to produce a big 2024 campaign to solidify that standing, but whether it is the flashy Sanders son or someone else, Jones seems to be on the hunt for a cheap quarterback given the stalled negotiations with Prescott -- and Sanders' rookie deal would be as cheap as it gets.

Sanders threw 27 touchdowns to only three interceptions in 2023 as Colorado went 4-8. The Buffs are moving back to the Big 12 Conference for 2024, and the step up in competition will either confirm the 22-year-old Texas native as someone who could lead the Cowboys into the future...or whether Jones will have to look elsewhere.
