Kirk Cousins found himself in an unexpected situation during the 2024 NFL Draft. After a promising but injury-shortened final season with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons, becoming their new franchise quarterback.

Despite his Achilles tear, Cousins had impressive stats before the injury, throwing for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns in just eight games. The Falcons, desperate for a change at quarterback, saw him as their immediate solution.

However, the draft brought a shocker. Instead of bolstering other areas of the roster with their No. 8 overall pick, the Falcons selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington. Cousins wasn't privy to this decision beforehand, leading to confusion and frustration within his camp. His agent, Mike McCartney, noted that Cousins was caught off guard, not even having donned a Falcons helmet before a potential successor was drafted.

Cousins, though, took the high road. On the "Bussin' with the Boys" podcast, he remarked, "I don't think there can be [hard feelings]. I don't think it's helpful." He understood the team's perspective, recognizing that they had to plan for the future. At 36 years old and coming off a serious injury, Cousins knew the importance of forward-thinking in the NFL. "Let's all be on the same page and try and go win a Super Bowl," he said, maintaining focus on the bigger picture.

Cousins and Brees handle successor picks with class

This scenario mirrors an experience from Drew Brees' career. On April 27, 2017, Brees was hog hunting with college friends in Louisiana when he was called to the New Orleans Saints' War Room during the NFL Draft. Sean Payton, the Saints' head coach, had his sights set on drafting Patrick Mahomes with the No. 11 pick.

Brees, a seasoned veteran with an illustrious career, understood the strategic move. "Had Mahomes been there at pick No. 11, we probably would've taken him," Brees admitted.

However, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to No. 10 to select Mahomes, leaving the Saints to draft cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Brees, reflecting on the near acquisition, said he would not have taken offense. "The organization has to do what it has to do. They have to prepare for the future," he explained.

Brees' experience resonates with Cousins' current situation. Despite the initial surprise, Brees continued to excel, leading the Saints to multiple successful seasons. He advised Cousins to focus on what he can control and to continue performing at his best. "Worry about the things you can control," Brees said, noting the Falcons' potential with talents like Drake London and Bijan Robinson.
