Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Lonnie Phelps was arrested on Wednesday night after allegedly crashing an SUV into a restaurant while under the influence and then refusing to cooperate with police.

According to the incident report from the Key West Police Department, obtained by TMZ Sports, the incident occurred at around 8:47 PM outside the Red Shoe Island Bistro in Key West.

Police were dispatched to the scene following reports of a traffic accident and found a black Hyundai wedged into the side of the restaurant. Upon questioning bystanders, officers identified Phelps and his girlfriend as the occupants of the vehicle.

However, when officers attempted to question Phelps and his girlfriend, they encountered a lack of cooperation. Despite several attempts to gather information, both parties were uncooperative, according to the police report.

After some time, Phelps was identified as the driver of the vehicle. Officers reported that he displayed signs of impairment, talked over them, and disobeyed orders during questioning.

Phelps agreed to voluntary field sobriety tests but became combative, complaining about the administration of the tests. Consequently, he was placed in custody and transported in a squad car.

Behavior During Transport

While being transported, Phelps reportedly continued to complain and make erratic statements.

An officer noted in the report that Phelps expressed thirst, questioned what the officer would do to him, asked not to be killed, inquired about the bail process, and made several incoherent statements, including claiming the officer was Russian.

At the police station, Phelps' behavior did not improve. He refused to take a breathalyzer test and at one point urinated on himself while sitting on a chair.

Ultimately, Phelps was cited for DUI and property damage and is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing next month.

Lonnie Phelps, a standout at the University of Kansas, signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2023. Despite being on the roster, he did not record any regular season snaps during his rookie year with the Browns.

This incident marks a significant setback for Phelps, who is in the early stages of his professional football career.

The Browns organization has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest. As Phelps prepares for his court hearing next month, his future with the team and in the NFL remains uncertain.
