The Green Bay Packers opened training camp Monday without their starting quarterback and won't see him until he has a new contract. That could change soon, very soon.
The team's general manager, Brian Gutekunst, announced that Jordan Love will not participate in training camp until his peculiar contractual situation is resolved. While he won't practice, Love will participate in other team activities.
Love modified his contract prior to last season, his first as a starter, and 2024 is the last of that agreement. He would earn $13.5 million, a small figure for a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Just this offseason, Baker Mayfield signed for $33.3 million to return to Tampa Bay, Kirk Cousins arrived in Atlanta as a free agent after signing for $45 million, Detroit awarded Jared Goff with $53 million annually and Trevor Lawrence extended his contract with the Jaguars for $55 million. None of them did what Love did in 2023, which was win a playoff game on the road.
An agreement might be in place very soon
In 2023, Jordan Love ended up throwing for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns against 11 interceptions and that earned him the right to fight for a new deal, one that could arrive sooner than expected.
Sources close to the team have said that both sides are "making progress" and an agreement could be reached in the upcoming hours. The preseason officially starts next week with the Hall Of Fame Game but the Packer don't play until the following week. While there is time and he is not expected to play much until the regular season starts, things are heading in the right direction.
However, there are still some around the league that believe that he is asking for a lot of money considering he only has one year as a starter. Others say that it is reason enough to do so. While supporting one thing or another, still is it seems the deserves a better deal when comparing numbers with other quarterbacks.
