Football fans were taken aback when Jon Gruden appeared at the Kansas City Chiefs' training camp earlier this week, clad in Chiefs attire. However, head coach Andy Reid was quick to quash any rumors that Gruden's visit indicated an impending return to the NFL sidelines.

Gruden has been largely out of the public eye since his sudden departure from the Las Vegas Raiders nearly three years ago. His resignation followed the release of controversial emails during an NFL probe into the Washington Commanders, where Gruden was found to have used offensive language. The fallout led to Gruden suing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league, claiming a deliberate effort to end his career. This legal battle remains unresolved, with Gruden recently appealing to the Nevada Supreme Court to avoid arbitration.

In a recent development before the 2023 season, Gruden took on an advisory role with the New Orleans Saints to help integrate Derek Carr, his former quarterback with the Raiders. Although there were discussions about a more permanent coaching role, no official position has been offered as the 2024 season approaches.

Could Gruden be joining the Chiefs?

Gruden's appearance at the Chiefs' camp, alongside Andy Reid, led to speculation about his intentions. Given their history together under Mike Holmgren with the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s, some speculated a potential professional reunion.

However, Reid dismissed these notions, explaining that Gruden's visit was merely a friendly gesture. Reid stated:

"Jon loves football, and we've known each other for three decades. It's always good to have him around, as he brings valuable insights and is a brilliant football mind."

It seems improbable that they would risk the controversy that might come with hiring Gruden. The negative attention could be detrimental to a team that's looking to become the first 3-peat Super Bowl champions.
