NHL Draft 2024 Round 1 Results: Who was drafted during the first day of the NHL Draft?

The NHL Draft happening again and great prospects like Mikael Granlund, Mike Hoffman and Jan Ruutan are ready to join the league after their great college careers. Each year, all teams in the league systematically assign the rights to amateur players who will play in the league. A player is considered an amateur if he has never played for an NHL team before is between the ages of 18 and 20.

The NHL Draft is underway this week

Once they begin playing regularly with the team that selects them, they acquire entry-level status. Any other player who does not fit these patterns is considered an unrestricted free agent (see below for explanation).

The way the draft works is roughly like this: based on a team's league ranking that season, it is assigned a position for that year's player selection. The 14 teams that didn't make the playoffs get the first 14 picks, and then they pick the ones that made the playoffs. So on and so forth in each round, with a total of seven rounds. Teams prefer to choose players in the first few rounds since it is assumed that the most qualified players come out of those rounds.

While Pittsburgh will receive Erik Karlsson, Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaliuk, and San Jose's 2026 third-round draft pick. Montreal receives Pittsburgh's 2025 second-round draft picks, Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, and Nathan Legare.

# 18 and # 20 - The Chicago Blackhawks receive the New York Islanders 2024 first-round (# 18) and second-round (# 50) picks for the Blackhawks 2024 first-round (# 20 via TB), and two second-round (# 54 via LA and #61 via VAN) picks.

The Chicago Blackhawks acquired the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2024 first-round pick (# 20), 2023 first-round pick (# 19 - Oliver Moore), Taylor Raddysh, and Boris Katchouk for Brandon Hagel.
