Collier/Marco “Y” Program on the Cutting Edge of Brain Health
Thanks to the generosity of Bob and Kelly Willenborg, of both Effingham, Illinois and Marco Island, the YMCA of Collier County South Campus is the only organization in Southwest Florida that has a one-of-a-kind SMARTfit Gamification program. It provides brain health training to specifically engage various parts of the human brain, especially for seniors or adults who may have declining cognitive, physical movement, or balance issues.
In Part Three of this series, we’ll examine how exercise, cognitive brain stimulation, and socialization can significantly improve the mental health for people of all ages, but in particular, for seniors or those with cognitive difficulties.
Marco Island YMCA plans for new $8.5 million 17,000-square-foot facility
The Marco Island YMCA is set to expand with a new two-story, 17,000-square-foot facility. The non-profit organization says it is designed to cater to the island’s growing senior population.
“We are bursting at the seams, and folks need a place to socialize, gather, and participate in activities that will help their wellness and fitness needs,” said Cindy Love-Abounader, President and CEO of the Marco Island YMCA.
