Legally, you don’t need travel insurance to go to Barbados. Neither the U.S. nor Barbados requires it. U.S. travelers need only a valid passport and an outbound ticket to get into Barbados and stay for up to six months.

But travel experts recommend insurance for any expensive vacation. If you plan to rent a vehicle for your vacation, consider adding rental car protection to your travel insurance policy. Getting insurance this way can give you more coverage and be more cost-effective than getting it through a rental car company.

Your travel insurance company will likely offer rental car protection as an add-on and also may include:

• A collision damage waiver
• Personal effects coverage
• Accident or injury coverage

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Cancellation insurance lets travelers claim back any non-refundable deposits made before their departure date should they need to cancel their vacation plans. Cancellation across all insurance providers is subject to certain terms and conditions. You should always check the fine print of your policy to see what constitutes a valid cancellation reason.

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Barbados. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Barbados for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

The table above compares five insurance policies from different providers. The prices range significantly, with Tin Leg offering a much cheaper policy than USI Affinity. Most of the plans offer 100% cancellation coverage, with World Nomads offering up to 125%. Likewise, most provide $500 in baggage and personal effects protection, but Nationwide offers up to $600 and World Nomads offers up to $1,000.

For medical coverage, Tin Leg has the lowest premium at $20,000, and World Nomads has the highest ($100,000). Tin Leg, USI Affinity and Travel Safe all supply up to $100,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage. This is eclipsed by Nationwide and World Nomads, who have caps of $250,000 and $300,000, respectively.

Overall, travelers who want more affordable insurance should opt for a plan like Tin Leg Economy, but those who wish to have more robust medical and personal effects coverage would be better suited to a plan like World Nomads Standard or USI Affinity Basic.
