What Your Favorite Beer Says about You

Every man has his go-to brew. Whether yours is a mass-produced domestic favorite or an obscure craft beer reveals more than you think about your personality, your political leanings, and even what kind of car you drive. We sifted through research and consulted with experts to find out what your favorite suds say about you.

If you drink this American classic, it means you’re patriotic and lean a little to the right politically, according to a recent University of Texas at Austin study. Bud has been your reliable pick for years, so you don't see any reason to change—and that’s okay! "The guy who drinks Budweiser has a six pack in the freezer and a couple of cases in the corner of the garage at all times," says Matt Simpson, owner of beer consulting company The Beer Sommelier. You're also 42 percent more likely to drive a truck, according to a survey by market research company Mindset Media, which has since been acquired by Google.

You're easy to get along with and just looking for a good time, the Mindset Media study found. You probably hail from Middle America and are a proud Republican, according to a poll from research firm AMP. "This guy's a little more suburban than the Budweiser drinker," Simpson says. One of your favorite pastimes: playing the lottery, according to Mindset Media. (If you win, you can buy as much Bud Light as you want!)

You think of yourself as an exceptional person, wear only name-brand clothes, and probably already have the new iPhone, per the Mindset study. Additionally, you’re more likely than the average Joe to flash an AmEx and drive a sports car. "This is the person whose perception is that export beers in green bottles are 'classy,'” says Simpson. Also, these are the guys who use the word "classy" unironically.

Research finds you're the life of the party and never run out of energy. You're also from California—or wish you were. "These are men who are doing okay for themselves, working middle management jobs, and fancy themselves laid back," Simpson says. No judgment if you take your Corona with lime: "It's almost a necessity," he says.

You drive a hybrid and use Apple products religiously. You're a Democrat, according to the AMP poll, but also probably not registered to vote, the Mindset Media study found. "Blue Moon is what some of us in the craft beer community consider a 'gateway beer,'" Simpson says. "It has the effect of taking someone who's drinking boring beer and converting them to drinking interesting beer." Still, you're probably in it for the image. "These guys are to craft beer what the Heineken drinkers are to life in general," he says. "They want to keep up with the beer Joneses without actually knowing anything about craft beer."

Obviously, you're a New Englander (at least at heart), and your political affiliations skew Libertarian, according to the AMP poll. You want a beer that has some flavor, but is still easy to drink. "These guys are a little snobbier than most beer drinkers," says Joe Conto, the creator of the craft beer minor at Paul Smith's College. "They're the Boston type. They're proud of history, the winter, and getting through tough stuff."

There's a pretty good chance you're from Pennsylvania, where Yuengling is made, and grew up drinking the stuff. For some reason, this is also the beer of choice in Florida, according to the AMP poll. "It used to be a distinctly regional beer, but it became available in the South a couple years ago," Simpson says. "People outside the Northeast who drink it feel like they're getting the forbidden fruit, like when Coors became available east of the Rockies."

"You're either a woman or a guy who doesn't really like beer," Conto says. Sorry, bro—sometimes the truth hurts.

You know what you love—hops, damnit!—and the only thing you love more than hops is the fact that you're a hophead. "It's almost like they have something to prove," Conto says. "They loved IPAs before everyone else did, and now that everyone else loves IPAs, they want hoppier and hoppier beers. But you can only go so far with hops before it gets unpleasant." You probably don't have much of a taste for experimentation, Simpson says—consistency and stability are your bread and butter.

Stouts are for guys who want a lot of flavor and complexity in their beer, without the hop bitterness, Simpson says. You're probably creative and adventurous, but seek gentle experiences. Stouts are also perfect for men who are health-conscious but wouldn't touch a light beer with a 10-foot pole, Conto says.

You're über-adventurous, love experimenting, and become bored quickly, Simpson says. "Sour beers are cheesy, funky, tart, and all manner of odd in their complexity," he says. "And they're the best thing ever."
