And there are a lot of options out there. As a registered dietitian, I recommend most of your protein come from whole food options like lean meats, dairy, beans, and legumes, but protein bars are fantastic for a quick, convenient, and nutrient-rich option and can make it easier to hit your goals and stay fueled on the go.
“Whether eaten between meals as a snack, as a pre-or post-workout food to fuel your workout or aid in recovery, or during travel when access to food is limited, they help sustain energy and satisfaction until your next meal,” says Julie Pace, RDN, a functional dietitian nutritionist & owner of Core Nutrition Health & Wellness.
Best Protein Bars
But not all protein bars are created equal or necessarily a good fit for your needs. When choosing the best bar for your lifestyle, consider your unique needs and when you’ll be eating the bars. “If you're using the bar as a post-workout snack, aim for a higher carb content to replenish glycogen stores and aid in recovery,” says Kelsey Sackmann, MS, RD, CPT, and owner of Kelsey P. RD. For a protein bar between meals, Sackmann recommends a bar with moderate to low carbohydrates and one with whole grains. “This will give you a boost of fiber, which most Americans, especially men, don’t get enough of, and help support digestion,” Sackmann says.

What to Consider
Amount of Protein
Protein isn’t the only nutrient you’ll get from a protein bar, but it’s obviously one of the most important. “Men should look for a protein bar with a high protein content, as this macronutrient is essential for muscle growth and repair,” says Brooke Baird, RDN, LD, owner of Simply Divine Nutrition LLC. “Aim for a bar that contains at least 11-18 grams of protein per serving,” Baird recommends.
Carbohydrates
“When it comes to carbohydrates in protein bars, men should consider the type and amount of carbs present,” encourages Sackmann. Protein bars can include ingredients like wheat, oats, quinoa, fruit, and other sources of fiber and sugars to add energizing carbohydrates. “Balancing carbs with protein helps support energy levels and muscle recovery,” Sackmann says.
Added Sugars
Most protein bars have added sugars or are sweetened with non-calorie sweeteners, including natural or artificial sweeteners. Pace recommends looking for a bar with 7 grams or less of added sugars, which can help you stay within the recommended 10 percent or less of daily calories from added sugars, or the American Heart Association recommends 36 grams or less per day.
Other Features
Depending on your nutrition needs and preferences, consider other features or certifications that protein bars may have. These could include gluten-free, nut-free, allergy-friendly, organic, no added sugars, vegan, dairy-free, or free from sugar alcohols.
