Broncos roster review: Tight End Greg Dulcich

Can the oft-injured tight end finally stay healthy and reach his potential in his third season?

The Denver Broncos selected Greg Dulcich with the 80th overall pick in 2022. So far that draft has been a real stinker for the Broncos. The only Bronco draftee from that draft who has been a starter so far is Damarri Mathis as a rookie at CB in 2022. Mathis has also been the most “valuable” Denver draftee by AV with a value of six so far, but the hope is that both Dulcich and Nik Bonitto are expected to play large roles on offense and defense this season.

Greg Dulcich was supposed to be the pass-catching tight end for the Broncos in 2022. He was injured at the start of the season missing the first five games, but recovered to play in ten games starting six before he was hurt and missed the final two games. He had 33 catches for 418 yards and 2 TDs as a rookie. Eighteen of his catches resulted in a conversion. He caught 60% of his targets (which is low for a TE).

There were great expectations for Greg in his second season but he only played in game one and game six before he was lost for the season to injury. So Greg has now played in twelve games in two seasons while missing twenty-two.

How Greg Dulcich fits with the Denver Broncos in 2024

The Sean Payton offense has generally employed tight ends as receivers to a great extent. From Jared Cook to Ben Watson to Coby Fleener to Jimmy Graham (who thought he was a WR) to Jeremy Shockey to former Bronco Billy Miller to Eric Johnson. Some seasons the Saints would have two tight ends with 40 or more catches so they are definitely a key cog in the Sean Payton passing game.

With Dulcich missing last season, the tight end group really didn’t have much of a role in the Bronco passing game in 2023. Bronco TEs accounted for 62 targets, 39 catches, 4 TDs and 19 first downs. Many single TEs in 2023 eclipsed those numbers. So Dulcich contributions were sorely missed.

The key for Greg in 2024 is staying healthy. He has had problems with his hamstrings and his feet.
