Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are unlikely to be welcomed back into the fold of the Royal Family for fear they’ll “betray” them again, claims Paul Burrell.

Princess Diana ’s former butler has addressed the faint possibility of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returning to the British monarchy. Three years ago, Harry, 39, and Markle, 42, stepped down from their official roles, and are currently based in California with their children, Archie, four, and two-year-old Lilibet.

“I think there is a very bad feeling in the Royal Family about Harry and Meghan that if they let them back into the royal fold they will be betrayed again. They see it as airing dirty laundry in public and telling tales in public when they know all too well that they shouldn’t be doing that. They see it as Harry now making money off the back of being royal, which is wrong in their books,” Burrell said.

“They have thrown other members of the family under the bus, which is well-documented now, and you can’t go back. Once you have done it, you’re out, and I think Harry has to understand that. It’s a cruel world, but they have to be like that to survive, and to not let one of their own prejudice the privileged world they live in.”

The ex-I’m a Celebrity! Get Me Out of Here! contestant added that Harry made his bed and now must lie in it after publishing his ear-burning memoir Spare, detailing, among other things, his feud with estranged brother William. “He knew what the score was when he was putting pen to paper. He knew what he was doing, and he knew what the consequences would be. He knew that his mother suffered the same consequences. He knew that when she wrote her book it had dire consequences,” he continued.

“She managed to crawl back until the Panorama interview, but once that aired it was the final straw. She had a troubled life trying to find a voice, and that’s what Harry’s been trying to do, trying to find a voice and a place. Everybody makes mistakes, but that was a huge mistake. Coming back to England, I wonder if he has thought how unpopular they are in their country, and that will bring its own problems.”

Burrell, who himself as penned multiple books lifting the lid on his royal employment, doubts the couple would be able to fit inside the regime again. “I personally think there is no job or working role for them in the Royal Family. I think that’s long gone. We shouldn’t expect them to come back as working members of the Royal Family, because they aren’t going to, they are going to have to plough their own field now," he added.

The 65-year-old wouldn’t be surprised, though, if Harry is feeling a little homesick. “I am sure that Harry misses some aspects of his life because his life in California must be quite vacuous at times, whereas here it's filled with friends and family, his culture, things he likes to do and I think he must miss some of that. They now have a family and may want to revisit some of Harry’s past. I’ve always thought it’s sad that they are missing out on Harry’s heritage, and they may now be thinking it's time to see something of the culture in England,” he told Slingo, before warning: “For the time being they have burned their bridges, not only to their country, but to their family.”

On Monday night, Harry and Meghan were feeling lucky – or rather puck-y – when they made a surprise appearance at an ice hockey game in Canada. Hazza performed the ceremonial puck drop on the ice ahead of the battle between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks. It was a full circle moment, taking place 21 years after his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, was asked to do the same ceremonial puck drop whilst visiting the region in honour of her Golden Jubilee.
