Grant Shapps was the Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield from 2005 until 2024, when he was defeated by Labour's Andrew Lewin.
He has held a series of Cabinet positions under four Tory prime ministers, including being appointed Transport Secretary in July 2019, when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister.
Shapps was previously Minister of State at the Department for International Development, but stood down after it was alleged that he had ignored accusations of bullying within the party.
