NATO is the acronym for The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, whose members agree to a mutual defence pact. Its 28 member states, which includes Britain, are expected to contribute 2% of their GDP to defence, although that sum is not mandatory. The combined military spending of NATO's members makes up more than 70% of the global total. Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, the organisation is based on a treaty signed in 1949 and hold periodical summits around the world.
