Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is desperately hoping to avoid an historic defeat for the Tories at this year's General Election.

But should he lose, the 44-year-old will certainly not be left penniless. Married to Indian heiress Akshata Murty, he is thought to be the richest premier the UK has ever had - and is even wealthier than King Charles.

He and his wife share a massive combined fortune of over £600 million, according to the most recent Sunday Times rich list. Rishi has come under criticism for flaunting his extortionate wealth on the campaign trail, including when he wore a £750 backpack to one of country's poorest areas.

Here, The Mirror takes a look at just how wealthy the Prime Minister is - and how much he pays in tax:

How rich is Rishi Sunak?

Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murty are said to be worth £651million, making them the 245th richest people in Britain, according to the Sunday Times rich list. The Prime Minister and his super-rich wife saw their wealth increase by £122million in 2024 compared to the year before.

It's even more than King Charles, who is estimated to be worth £610million, putting him in 258th place on the list. The couple's joint fortune is driven largely by Ms Murty's stake in Infosys, an Indian IT company her father founded. N.R. Narayana Murthy is listed as the sixth richest man in India.

The couple own four different properties, with two in London, one in Yorkshire, and another in California. They are valued at more than £15 million. As Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak also has a flat above 10 Downing Street, as well as access to the Chequers country lodge in Buckinghamshire.

The family owns a five-bedroom mews home in Kensington, west London, which is estimated by estate agents to be worth more than £7m. At weekends and during the holidays, Rishi, Akshata and their two daughters are known to spend time at the family's Grade II-listed Georgian manor constituency home in the village of Kirby Sigston in North Yorkshire. The huge property, which they bought before Rishi was elected as an MP in 2015, reportedly has its own swimming pool, gym, yoga studio, and tennis court. It's set across a 12-acre plot of land, and is worth more than £2m.

Alongside these two houses, they also own a flat in west London on Old Brompton road, which is used by visiting family. In Santa Monica, the Sunaks have their own penthouse, which is valued at £5.5million.
