The events of the past fortnight, starting with the senseless attack in Southport which saw the heartbreaking loss of Alice, Bebe, and Elsie has left people reeling and struggling to come to terms with an act of such evil. But as we grapple with grief, we have drawn strength from the incredible resilience and unity shown by our community.

In these dark times, we have seen the very best of our people. The response from residents, businesses, and community groups has been overwhelming, the living embodiment of Jo Cox’s beautiful words that we have more in common than that which divides us.

Whether it’s the bravery of our police, the tireless work of healthcare professionals the thousands who turned out for a vigil, or even a local bricklayer working frantically in the baking sun to rebuild the wall of a mosque, this unwavering commitment to one another is what makes Southport and the wider region so special.

We will not be intimidated by those who seek to disrupt our peace. The hooligans responsible for assaulting the same police officers who rushed to the horror of that scene, and the racists and Islamophobes targeting mosques will be brought to justice. We will continue to stand united against their attempts at violence, racism, and intimidation.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer twice came to visit the town, demonstrating the kind of strong national leadership our country needs. His personal commitment and the swift actions that followed, including emergency funding and a commitment to summary justice, have provided much-needed reassurance. Already, we are seeing those responsible charged and sentenced.

As we remember the victims and support their families, let us also celebrate the resilience and unity that define Southport. With its rich history and bright future, Southport will not be defeated by recent events. Together, we will rebuild and recover. Our heart is strong, and our spirit will not be broken.

Southport is a true jewel in the Liverpool City Region’s crown, and it would mean a lot to the town if people came to see it for themselves.

The splendour of Lord Street, which some claim served as the inspiration for Paris’ Champs Élysées, its stunning coastline hosting the charming Flower Show and magnificent Air Show, and come 2026, The Open will return to Royal Birkdale, showcasing the area on a global stage.

The senseless murder of 3 little girls should have been the signal for everybody to unite in collective support, but those with nefarious intent tried to hijack events to sow the seeds of discord. The legacy of such horrific events won’t be the disorder on the streets, it will be the resolve of the people of Southport.

On behalf of the region, I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support from across the country.

Moving forward, our focus is on healing and rejuvenation. It will not happen overnight, but with continued support and unity, we will overcome this dark chapter.
