Prof Sir John Curtice will become a main feature on TV screens to break down the general election results - but who is the polling guru and does he already know the result?

Sir John has covered elections for decades and has earned a reputation for having an in-depth insight into how the nation intends to vote. The political science prof at Glasgow's University of Strathclyde is one of the brains behind the exit poll that has been used to give as clear an indication as possible about the General Election outcome.

While most Brits will hold its collective breath until 10pm to find out the exit poll results, Sir John might just be one of the few in the country who will know the outcome several hours in advance.

But what is Sir John's background and how did he become a polling whizz?

In addition to his work at Strathclyde University, the 70-year-old is also a senior research fellow at the National Centre for Social Research. But most Brits will know him as the brainy bloke off the telly who pops up to share the nation's voting intentions.

He has been a regular feature on UK TV screens since 1979 and has developed a cult following online. The X/Twitter account "Is Sir John Curtice on TV?" has amassed a following of more than 13,800 since joining the social media platform in 2017.

Exit poll creation

Sir John created the exit poll with statistician David Firth in 2005, which has gone on to be impressively accurate. The poll has proven to be largely reliable with the exception of 2015 when a hung Parliament was suggested - instead, then-PM David Cameron won a slim majority.

But it has swung the other way in regards to its reliability and accurately predicted the number of Conservative seats in 2010. While the exit poll aims to provide an accurate picture of how the nation voted, it is not infallible and is not a definitive view of how the electorate cast their ballots.

Does Sir John Curtice already know the election result?

Unlike the majority of the British public, Sir John likely already knows the outcome of the General Election. The polling guru made the shock revelation during a sit down interview with the UK in a Changing Europe's Anand Menon.

He told Mr Menon that he will likely know the result of the exit poll at 2pm on polling day - but he also indicated it would be unwise to tell anyone as he could end up in jail if he shared the outcome. In the UK, there are limits on what information can be shared on election day as it could sway people to vote in a certain way.
