Heartbreaking tributes have been paid to a "forever young" 15-year-old boy who tragically drowned in a Wigan beauty spot.
Alex Crook got into difficulty at Scotman's Flash, a pool of water and nature reserve near Wigan, Greater Manchester, on Saturday afternoon. Efforts were made to rescue the teen from the water by members of the public and staff at the lake, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Hundreds of tributes have now been paid to the 'amazing' and 'handsome' young man who has been described as 'the brightest star in the sky'. "Rest easy mate, you've got an entire community of people who will miss you forever," one tribute posted on a GoFundMe set up to support Alex's family said.
"Forever young. Will be missed a lot," another continued. "Everyone will miss you so much and you are such an amazing person. Gone too soon forever in our hearts." Paying tribute to the teen, another note said: "You are the brightest star in the sky Alex you will always be in our hearts lad. All our love from nanna and grandad xxx."
Many people shared their condolences for Alex's family and friends, telling them 'our hearts are breaking for you'. 'I've set up this page to help my brother and Alex's mum after the devastating loss of there [sic] son," a post written by the GoFundMe creator reads.
"As you can imagine trying to sort a funeral for your 15-year old-son is something no-one should ever have to do. If this is the only I can do to help in anyway I can. In loving memory of Alex Crook."
In a post on social media over the weekend, Scotman's Flash also confirmed the tragic death, writing they are 'deeply saddened' by the incident. "Our staff noticed the young man in the water and attempted to save him but were sadly unable to," the post continued.
"We'd like to thank them for their courage and determination. Our thoughts are with the young man's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
Greater Manchester Police said it does not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Alex's death.
