A major shopping centre in Paris was evacuated and a train station shut as police searched the area for a possible gunman.

Armed officers with helmets and shields were out in force in La Defense, a business district in the western suburbs of the French capital.

Someone called an emergency line claiming an armed man was seen near the Westfield Les 4 Temps shopping centre, but concerns about a possible armed man proved unfounded.

Footage shows panicked shoppers running inside the shopping centre and later having to walk slowly with their arms raised in the air as police carried out a search.

In the video, officers wearing face shields are seen patting some of them down.

The shopping center was being evacuated to allow for checks, the Paris police department said on Twitter.

It later said as the operation came to a close: "Investigations of the area are ending.

"At this stage no suspicious individual has been spotted."

La Defense metro and RER station was shut while police searched the area. Officers were called to the district at about 10am local time on Tuesday.

A man who was stuck inside the train station told Mirror Online: "We are safe. We are just waiting inside the station."

He said "a lot of police" had descended on the area.

A witness tweeted: "Apparently there is an armed guy at La Defense.

"Everything is cordoned off and there are anti-terrorist police cars on the esplanade."

La Grande Arche de la Defense, a monument and building in the business district, was also closed as a precaution.

A police source told Le Figaro earlier: "We are looking for an armed individual who would have been seen at the 4 Temps shopping center in the Defense district."
