Sven-Goran Eriksson's funeral is taking place in his hometown of Torsby, Sweden following his death at the age of 76.

The Swede passed away on August 26 and tributes have poured in for the man who managed England for five years. He will have a New Orleans-style funeral procession with a brass band leading his coffin the 700 metres walk from Fryksande church to the Kollsberg homestead.

Funeral adviser Christopher Jansson says: "I think there will probably be as many standing outside the church as there will be inside. Sven was so popular."

Eriksson had endured a lengthy battle with cancer before he died last month. He confirmed in January this year that he had terminal pancreatic cancer, but continued to be vocal about his battle and desire to overcome his illness.

A documentary about Eriksson's life was broadcast by Amazon Prime shortly before he passed away, where the Swede delivered an emotional final message, declaring: "I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when we die, but life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is."

Mirror Football will keep you up to date as the former England, Lazio and Manchester City boss is laid to rest with his family, ex-England captain David Beckham and other stars now in Sweden paying their respects.

Nancy's tears

Nancy Dell’Olio wept as she said: “Sven will be always part of my life as I was part of his life and he will always be with me.”

Asked what will you miss about Sven, Nancy said: “I will just miss him. I will miss that part of our life. When you love someone and someone is gone, part of your life is gone forever in one way.

“I will miss our love, our beautiful travels, the love that we gave each other.”

Just before wiping her eyes, she added: “I wasn’t supposed to cry.”

Sven’s sister-in-law Yomira John, 57, sang La Vie En Rose on stage.

She said: “This is an honour for me singing this song because Sven asked me to sing it for him. He loved it. The song represents the love between Sven and my sister.”

Eriksson's good friend giving speech

Sven’s close pal Bengt Berg is giving a speech on stage.

He said: “He was a great person and a good friend of mine. A few months ago we stood here at this spot and welcomed Spring. We had many shared memories from here and our youth.

“He remained Svennis, Svennis from Torsby, a small town on the edge of the Swedish map.”

Bengt said Sven lived his dream of becoming a footballer, which made him realise “The wings of dreams need grass underfoot”.

He added: “People marvelled at your ability to look on the bright side of life. You were both very ordinary and very unique. That is why you were so loved.”

Overlooking Sven’s beloved Lake Fryken, he looked at the coffin as he told his pal: “You have now returned to your home shores once and for all. Thank you Sven.”

Procession - including YNWA - completed

Mourners have now completed the procession, which included a brass band playing songs, including You’ll Never Walk Alone and Bare Neccessities.

They are sitting in a wooden ampitheatre overlooking Sven’s beloved Lake Fryken and a stage, with Sven’s coffin in front of it.

The star’s close pal Bengt Berg will read a eulogy paying tribute to him.

Two guitarists are singing an anthem which is popular in the region of Varmland, where Sven was from.

Sven’s coffin is now being carried out of the church, with members of Torsby Sports Club forming a guard of honour at the doors. It will be moved to a white hearse, which will carry it as part of a New Orleans style procession, which will include a brass band.

Sven's family depart

Sven’s close family, including his 95-year-old dad Sven, his children Johan and Lina and his partner Yaniseth, are now laying red and white roses next to his coffin as part of a moving farewell ceremony.

Sven’s partner Yaniseth broke down in tears and had to be comforted by a church warden as she rubbed her hands on the coffin in an emotional farewell.

Moving personal sermon read

In a moving personal sermon, priest Ingela Alvskog, who is leading the service, told mourners: “Sven-Goran was genuinely kind and never deliberately caused problems.

“He was a loving father, but not good at going shopping!

“He was not too interested in dancing either, but became quite proficient at the salsa.

“Sven-Goran was never late. He would rather be five or ten minutes early.

“Taking it easy on holiday was never his thing. He loved routine and discipline.

“He loved good food and drink and travelling first class.

“Sven-Goran was mentally strong, even in adversity. He had a will of iron and never gave up. In spite of his illness Sven-Goran’s last few months have been full of life.

“He received many tributes from around the world.”

The priest, who was a close friend of Sven’s, said she will always remember seeing the childhood Liverpool fan on the pitch at Anfield with his granddaughter while taking charge of a charity match earlier this year.

And said she and his loved ones have “so many beautiful memories” of the star, who she said “brought so much joy” and “a lot of laughter”.

Mourners laughed as she told how he began wearing suits as a teenager and would avoid doing his school homework, instead laying on his bed reading detective novels.
